Discarding used hydraulic/transmission fluid?

Autozone, Oriellys, etc all take oil. I took 20 gallons in five gallon buckets to Autozone after last hydraulic oil change. The guy let me pull around to the side door. They had a 200 gallon take. I helped him pour it out and got a couple buckets back to keep. Everytime you buy oil you pay a disposal fee. So it's not costing these places anything to take it.

Keep at least some of it to use in old style oil hand pump lubricators. I've read on some of these boards that it makes a pretty good penetrating oil. Some say they mix it with acetone and there is supposed to be a mix ratio out here on the web somewhere.

I put my oils of all types in sealed 55 gallon steel drums (all types no distinction) and when I get 150+ gallons I call the oil recycler to come and pick it up. Radiator fluids go into a plastic barrel.

If your are close to me I could use a couple hundred gallons.

Dont use used oil as bar oil. Totally different animal. It has no sticking power when warm and a gal of real bar oil is only $12.

I did try it a few times and noticed my bar/chain getting alot hotter. I dont need to trash a $35 chain and $40 bar for $12 in oil.

My mechanic burns waste oil to heat his shop in the winter. I just take all my used oil to him, he gives me as many 5 gal containers as I need to put it in. It also seems to help 'grease the skids' when I need to get my car in for repair/inspection.

Bar oil, that's a great idea.

I used to think so too when money was tight. Found out chains/bars didn't last very long. The oil contains grit (less than 20 microns, but it's still there) and doesn't have additives to cause it to stick (tackifier) like chain lubes have. Does make a difference.

Of course they will.
Dump it in the can with used engine oil.
As long as there is no water in it, it's not a problem.
I wouldn't mention it, as some non-knowing individual might THINK it's a problem.

I ended up with some transmission oil mixed with water. It is in a plastic jug and I will just throw it on the next big hot bonfire. Burn the oil and burn off the water.

I used to used old cranky oil for bar oil. Actually, come to think of it, that's probably all my leaking STIHL, POS saws deserve!

Could it be re-used in say a log splitter, or a floor jack. Or just anything that uses hyd fluid. Ballast in tires, just kidding. My reservoir for my log splitter holds a good amount.
