I haven't read any posts here yet about this new item from Dish Network
called the Sling Adapter. I see it's available now for about $50 and
hooks up to select DVR receivers they have and allows live access to
your dish from any remote laptop or phone with internet access.
I am considering this for rooms in our house where we don't have a tv,
but would like to watch (basement etc)
it also gives access while not home, so, technically if I wanted to
watch something recorded at my home DVR i could log in with the laptop
and watch that also.
Has anybody purchased one of these? if so any feedback?
thanks

No Brin, that's not the sling adapter, but the Hopper came out as their promo about 1 month after I signed up with them.
The sling adapter is a small unit, the size of a tablet i think, that allows viewing from cell phone/tablet/laptop thru the
internet. The hopper is a huge capacity DVR with multiple tuners i think, that allow more shows recorded at the
same time, then they have these "joeys" that you need in each room to access the hopper. I do have to say
those commercials were great for the Hopper!
Here's the link for the sling adapter:

I know a dish installer and about 18 mo ago he said they were giving them away and he gave me one of the sling adapters. It's pretty cool but just a novelty really I don't have a lot of use for it. I can set the DVR when I'm away from home from my iPhone, IPAD or computer, and you can watch anything in your programming package or saved on your DVR for free since there's no fee other than then the initial cost. it does work ok, as long as you have a decent internet connection picture is not true Hd but its watchable. When I first saw them they retailed for $100 but it wasn't worth that to me at the time.
I have tried to use it on a few public wifi's & sometimes the network was too slow to work but on the home wifi should work decent enough.

I thought they were giving them away since they didn't sell so well, so you might. You might have to threaten to close your account.
I called to cancel an Onstar account today and they offered me $20 in phone credits and service for 30% off to stay on with them.

Dutch445-

I have been using a Slingbox for about the past 5 years. This is a standalone device and not the Dish Network adapter, but the Slingbox standalone - and the current offering by Dish - do exactly the same thing.

I originally purchased it do to a work schedule that had me going overseas for extended periods of time and I wanted to watch american football.

I currently use it to watch my current DirectTV receiver at my remote rural property. It saved me from having to get a cable or anther DirectTV subscription at my remote site. It works fine for this purpose.

Basically, the Sling Adapter plugs into your Internet Router (so you need an Internet connection at your Dish Receiver location) and then into your DVR or Receiver itself.

To access your equipment remotely you can either log directly into your Sling Adapter (you must configure your router to allow incoming connections) or you can log into the Sling website and watch / control your equipment through the website. In the later method, your Sling Adapter is pushing the content to the web as compared to you going into (pulling it from your router). Same basic result, but a little different concept based on router settings / etc.

The thing to keep in mind is that you are physically just watching "your receiver" in another location. For example, If I am watching tv using the slingbox at my RURAL location - I am actually changing the channel of my HOME DirectTV receiver. The TV does not have to be on, but the Receiver does. Also, I do not have a multiple tuner receiver, so if my wife were to change the channel on the HOME receiver this would change what I saw on the discplay in the rural location. This may not be a problem for you if you have a multiple tuner Dish Receiver. Most of these now allow for multiple room recording of different channels.

Overall the device does what says it will do. The picture will not be a good as you sitting at home and the speed of video stream will be only as good as your internet service and speed. Cable internet speed will be most DSL and wireless.

For what I wanted to do, it has been a good device for the cost. I think I originally paid $100. No monthly fees and it saved me from having to get cable or DirectTV at my remote property. Longer term I think the concept will be obsolete as all current cable companies and Dish/DirectTV are working on ways to allow current subscribers to stream their service directly over the internet. (no sling adapter/etc).

Great, thanks for the report Sinecure, at $50 i think it might be worth having. If I end up in a room to exercise where I don't have
a TV I can use my laptop and it will keep me occupied while excercising, and if we travel we can watch local stuff on the laptop camping etc.
(although most campgrounds have cable!) I have DSL at the house, so i'm sure that limits the video quality.

I looked at Slingbox as a way to distribute HD television over the LAN in my home.
The deal breaker is that there's was no Sling Player app for my HD TV. It just wasn't intended to do this. Slingbox was (is?) for low(er) resolution remote viewing.
