Im renovating an older heavy duty 3 pt. disk (Poplarville mfg. co.) aka Pico. I have dissassembled one gang. Im planning to sand blast and paint the entire thing. I will probably also replace all the bearings. There are a couple of spacers I need as well. Please look at this picture below. I have a couple of questions.

1) Notice how the bottom of the bracket is non-existent. This bracket only allows for 3 of the 4 bolts to be used. All of the brackets on this disk are like this. Is it factory, or has someone modified these hangers for some reason?

2) Are these bearings going to be easy to find? What do I ask for?

that is factory. carry them to a jd dealership see if they can match it.the bearing and 2 round housing look very similar to jd.they may can match the spools too.

The bottom of the hangers are like that on most discs to make it easier to repair the gang as a component and remount it.

Bearing wise it would be interesting to know the size of your arbor bolt! Many discs just used a round hole and a spacer over the arbor bolt square to round to assist the spacers to keep from binding in the bearing.

We sell a lot of tillage parts to people running JD tillage because of price. I'd need to know more but do look around if you have the time, you could save some big money here!

Like the answers above, having the bottom open makes it easy to drop out the entire gang. Just search on "square bore disc harrow bearings" and you will find tons of sources. In general, disc bearings have triple lip seals. These triple lip seals do a great job keeping dirt out and grease in but they create a lot of friction drag. The drag isn't a problem on slow turning disc bearings so that is their largest use. TSC is one of the sources for the bearings in 1" and 1 1/8" size along with the flanges. Square bore bearings are pretty pricey - they are about $33 each at TSC.

I went through a gang on my International 37 discs last fall. Mine had round centered bearings and I purchased them from Shoup.
Shoup Manufacturing Company
I recall them having square centered bearings as well. They may be able to cross the mod.# of your discs with what you need.

I realize this post is a little dated, but came across it while searching for information on rebuilding a 3 PT hitch on a disc rebuild. We have an 8' unit made by PICO, Poplarville Implement Company. Poplarville, MS is where they were made and sold. I am about 40 miles from Poplarville. There is a local dealer in Poplarville that still carries some parts that cross over. We have replaced bearings many times on ours and you can get them from most anyone that carries bearings. The bearing housing that you showed above is standard from factory without a bottom in it. Our 8' unit has held up well and is over 40 years old.

I recently purchased a 9' unit so we can run two disc at the same time. I have it torn down to the frame now and am in the process of putting it back together. I need to rework the hitch portion of it now and am looking for ideas on how to build it.
