Disk Mower Reminder

For all of you that use disc mowers we read the warnings and intellectually its clear that they can throw rocks, etc..
but until you actually experience it........


My place grows ticks chiggers and rocks about 10x as well as anything else. I have brush cut my fields many times and then went rock picking to avoid disc mowers problems.
But apparently I missed one and the other day I found it the hard way. The mower made one h%$^ of a racket and so I shut it down quickly, but it was clear that it had throw something.
After it spooled down I lift up the cover to take a look and one of the blade mounts and an entire blade was missing /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif.
Not good. After a little inspection I found one of the bolts that had held the blade on was sticking half way through the cover!
The cover on this unit is kevlar.

So while I bet those who use these machines are aware of the danger, just a reminder that the cover is there for a reason!

I will be checking for rock more carefully know and checking the torque on those blade mount bolts as well.

Not only the guards on disc mowers but on rotary mowers as well. Those rotary mowers will sling stuff like a rifle. One guy locally a couple years ago died when a golf ball sized rock flew up from his rotary mower and broke his skull. Another kid was out watching his dad and lost part of his arm when the rotary mower flung a piece of old iron out the back.

I agree most of this stuff is dangerous.

My disc mower tends to throw stuff far worse than the rotary cutter. Its probably more a case of the direction. The rotary tends to throw it to the rear and the disc mower seems to throw stuff either way with equal frequncy. To the rear is no big deal usually since no one is nearby.

I will not let anyone anywhere near the tactor while running either.
