Just removed another section of apple trees(98 of 'em). All that's left is original orchard grass and a little rough. Borrowed a set of disks and breaking it up for leveling to be mowed. I am not getting more than a couple inches penetration and it's very clumpy. Is this what I can expect from running just disks or are adjustments needed? Thanks in advance

Additional weight will help you with the disks.

I've found the box scraper with scarifiers to be a better way to smooth things out. I also use the tiller to get 8"+ of penetration, and to break up the sod.

HR,
I'm afraid you're not going to get much with that disc. As was suggested some weight will help you but that disc really isn't for breaking new ground. It's more of a grooming disc. Just not enough weight or the proper discs to do a good job breaking down new ground.

Thanks for the quick responses.Guess it's time to hook up the box scraper and rip and tear a bit.

How come you took oout all of those apple trees/w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif? Ive got 45 older trees and started planting a few new ones. Im sad everytime I lose one to wind/storm. I can't imagine losing 96 all at once, bummer.

Anyways, I would probably run a tiller over the area also.

Good Luck.

Gotta agree with the Dr. on this one. I think that some more weight will help, but that disc is too much light to do anything in the way of primary tillage. Perhaps if you first use your boxblade with the scarifiers down, you might loosen things up enough to use your disc. Otherwise you might consider farming this work out to someone with a larger tractor/plow/disc setup.

We started w/ nearly 1000 apple trees. Probably 600 left for the deer and the ones friends and family take. Still trying to get the remainder trimmed up. Orchard was abandoned for a few years before we arrived. Want some?

yes, there's farmers in the neighborhood but we enjoy doing the work.

Trying to use rippers on box blade didn't work/w3tcompact/icons/tongue.gif.All the ripped up sod just piled up between the box blade and the tractor. Ended up removing the sod w/ fel, then box blade, then disk w/ weight on, meanwhile the wife see's what's happening and jumps on her Kubota to bail me out/w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif. We finished it off w/ the cultipacker and backblading w/ fel. Turned out great considering the mess it was in a few hours ago.
Thanks for the suggestions

May I suggest a visit to a large farm equipment dealer and look at a real disk and you will see way yours does not do the job that you like. The disks that farmers used when I was growing up was a lot like the one you have but only bigger. They did not work either. Weight really does not help, it is a design problem or lack of design. Besides a disk was design to put the finish touchs on a plowed field but other tools work better than a disk. Now if you can get a off-set disk, then you would have a disk to do what you wanted it to do. Of course then you would have to get a BX to pull the Off-set.

Can you get enough traction with those turf tires to pull the discs through the sod?

Yes, I am very happy with the traction from the o.s. turf tires.
All 4 are loaded w/ Rimguard.
