I saw a wonderful 3pt connected unit that would cut hedges and ditches. Can anyone direct me to an economical attachment that would be able to safely cut step ditches with a Cut, or scut?

I see this type attachments on the industrial tractors that the state and county use for road maintenance.

If you are talking about a boom mower that hangs off the side of the tractor they are great but the word "economical" in normally not used in the same sentence. Probably the most economical option is a sickle bar mower that can cut at different angles.

It all depends on what you call economical and what you are expecting of it.
There is a company in Ohio that makes self contain boom mowers for CUT and based upon the last time I say their price you will be near if not over $10,000 but certainly over $5,000.

Bomford: Hedge and Verge Mower Range Supply! Boom mower.

There is a company who makes a small sickle cutter which is made to attach to your bucket and run off of your tractor's hyd that is a lot lower price.

IF you have never operated a boom mower or any mower that hangs off to the side you need to know you can get tippy real quick with such a cutter. If you buy one find an Ole experience operator and ask him the secrets to remaining safe. Like if working around pond or any drop off cut in reverse so if cutter hits something that stops the tractor it swings the tractor away from the drop off rather than quickly into it.

No Body makes anything small enough for a Cut, or scut?

Are you wanting a boom style or one that directly attaches to the 3pt.

Bush hog and woods, plus others i sure make a bush hog style mower that attaches to the 3pt and sticks off to the side of the tractor. The smallest tractor for this type is 60HP i think, but some have run with smaller. These are pretty expensive (7000 + or so IIRC)

Another option would be a flail. Some are offsettable and have up and down adjustment. These are more compatable with smaller tractors, but can be expensive. Usually the ones that are adjustable vertically are larger professional units aimed at ROW mowing, and therefore very expensive, in the same range as the bush hog above.

Probably the cheapest option would be a used sicklebar mower. Assuming that your not trying to mow 2"+ brush all the time. They can be had cheap (500) plus most can adjust from below grade to verticle. But check on the specific model since not all can cut in those positions.

Without knowing your exact layout, im going to say you could get away with a sickle bar. Even if you want to buy new, there around 3000. Used 500.

It will give you several feet to the side of the tractor with which to work.

A hydraylic boom, like mentioned before would be the perfect thing but theyre way expensive.

Theres a good sickle bar discussion here that may give you some ideas http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/attachments/150223-more-sickle-bar-mower-questions.html

Hello,
I am also looking for a sickle bar mower with hydraulic lift. I would like to look at new ones, however I can not find a dealer near by. I would also like some feedback from some owners.

Thanks,

Matthew
