Hi. Because of bad water flow I needed to change and lower the old waterpipe with a new one. All rental escavator where all out, so I went for my BX . It worked well and I was impressed (again) what this little machine can do.
You need to plan more accurate becauce of the limited reach of the backhoe, but if you do that the BX works just fine.

Looks great! You are correct on the limited reach though, extra planning is needed.

You are right about the BX's being great for ditch digging. My BX25 dug this trench for underground utilities. In your neck of the woods, it was over 50 meters long.

how was this? i'm about to embark on something similar in the next weeks and am wondering just how long it's really going to take. need to dig about 200', 40" deep.

as you were moving along the trench were you able to raise the bucket and scoot the tractor along with the backhoe, or do you need to actually drive forward.

you can use the bh to push you along. Sometimes you do have to get off and drive the machine forward, like if there is any rocks holding you back.

one thing is because of the BX's small wheels, crossing a trench can be an exciting experience. Using the bh to lift the rear over sometimes works, but due to the limited length and strength of the BH it is iffy at best.

If you have a trench where you can drive away at the end its best.

A 200' trench will take some time depending on your experience and ground. The BX bucket is small. Several weeks ago I trenched about 75' to a depth of 2'. With the sticky clay, rocks and roots, it took me half the day. And I know how to run a backhoe pretty well.

Like the wide bucket. Did you do a build thread on it? How wide is it and does the tractor handle it well?

A cleanout bucket is on my list of things to build. Im thinking maybe 24"- 32" wide????

It might be worth your while to rent a trencher
first to accomplish several things;

1. break the hardpan to 40 inches in depth

2. push aside the volume of dirt removed
by the trencher as you are pulling the
dirt through the trench with less effort

3. give yourself an automatic bench mark
to follow for the depth of the trench.

4. this will be the big help-dig the trench to
reduce the time needed for the excavation
and break through any roots first and find
any thick roots you may have to cut with
a saw.

a. this will also reduce the strain on the lower
boom as the less dirt there is, the less chance
there is that the cylinders on the lower boom
and dipper bucket will be bent as there is less
mass to dig against as the trench allows the dirt
to be pulled forward with near zero resistance.

Before you backfill-

Fill the trench with water to make quick work of the
settling and then have near zero work to do when
regrading after a few days as the water will hasten
the settling of the dirt.
