I have an opportunity to buy a 5010 locally with a little over 2000 hrs, runs well, appears to be solid mechanically/well maintained and is equipped with a backhoe. Runs good and is in good condition. I can pick it up for about $3K. I don't need it and would likely just buy it to resell it. I have owned several smaller trenchers that were purchased for a quick flip but know little about this model. Seems like a smokin deal to me. I see similar units listed for $7-12K but have found 3-4 Richie Bros past auction prices for ones w/o hoes for as little as $2500-$4500.

Can anyone tell me if this is as good of deal as I think it is and any personal knowledge about these machines? What do you think would be a reasonable selling price if I were to buy it with the intention of making a quick profit.

That is a good deal and you should be able to double your money. Be sure to check all functions of the trencher, especially the forward and reverse engagement, make sure the chain has adjustment left and that the stick and chain will lift the machine with no issues. In addition to the obvious, check the drive for excessive play and clicking on tight turns.

Its a good machine and I would be very tempted also! As a young guy I worked at Ditch Witch as a mechanic for a short time between auto dealer jobs.

I also worked on a seismic crew back then after that stint as the Ditch Witch operator and crew mechanic I put a lot of miles on a 6010 in all kinds of lousy weather in all kinds of lousy but beautiful back country.

Check the drive chains and sprockets under the gear shift tunnel make sure the creep gear is operational the chains and sprockets really take a beating and they are not fun to replace. Is it a deutz diesel or a wisconsin gas?

If its the diesel remember to always run it at near full throttle since they are air cooled it affects the diesel worse than the gas engine for some reason thats what I know about them its been many many years since I was around one. hth

Did you look up what they are selling for? I don't see how you can make much money on it when there are some out there for sale for the same price.

I have a 3500DD that I bought at auction for $3,000 with 1,700 hours on it. Before buying it, I searched online and saw it for sale at a dealer for $7,000. I don't know how long he had it sitting on the lot, but for whatever reason, he gave up on trying to get his asking price and ended up with less then half of what he wanted for it.
