Diverter valve operation

I want to add hydraulics to my backhoe thumb. I am thinking the easiest way would be to install a diverter valve which would tap off one of the stabilizers to operate the thumb cylinder.

My question is would switching from stabilizer to thumb affect the other, for instance, with the stabilizer down would switching the diverter to the thumb cause the stabilizer to loose pressure and move up? Could the diverter be switched to the thumb for long periods without affecting the stabilizer?

I wouldn't tap into any safety related items! On my backhoe, I could snag the return/PB line and put in a valve if I wanted (it would only work if the joysticks weren't being used.) Or you could divert the stick or dipper, which would be safer.

No it's not gonna effect the stabilizers if you tap one of those, even over long periods.

But I wouldn't want to do so just for usability. Tap one of the main functions that way you can operate the thumb without having to constantly move your hand off a main function. You will be more fluent at operating

I bought a WoodMaxx backhoe 3 years ago and ordered it with the hydraulic thumb option. The use a manually operated diverter valve to switch hydraulic power from the right stabilizer to the thumb. I've used it a fair amount and not had any problems. I can't imagine diverting hydraulics from any of the basic hoe operation to use the thumb as most times you still want full operation of the hoe with thumb operation.

Put the diverter into the bucket circuit. Then you just hit the button to move the thumb and off the button to use the bucket. Plumb the lines so the same joystick movement brings the thumb to the bucket and bucket to the thumb.
This is how I plumbed the diverter on my excavator thumb. I also have the same diverter plumbing on my tractor's loader bucket for the grapple. Bucket curl or dump closes and opens the grapple. Very instinctive with only your finger or thumb moving on and off the button on the joystick.

Could not agree more, you want the diverter tied into a circuit that is under control of one of the handles you have your hand on while operating the bucket. Constantly moving to another handle for that operation defeats the convenience of the diverter.

If you wanna move your hand, forget the diverter and just use your tractor's rear remote.

I know this is a old thread but maybe you Guy's could help me. I am trying install a hyd thumb on a jd 310j and have been unable figure how to do it with a diverter valve. Please see my post today under Hydraulics. Thanks
