Diverter valve diverts pressurized hydraulic fluid to front & rear remote valves as well as 3 pt. hitch. If you don't have a loader attached or any other type of front implement then you would position this valve to be in the 1 o'clock position. Since most people have at least a loader then the diverter valve would be in the 11 o'clock position.

I can use everything hydraulic right now so if i took the loader off i still could so why have a selection. everything works in the one mode its in.

Mike, Is your FEL plumbed into the diverter block (some call this selective control valve (SCV)). If the FEL is plumbed throught these ports and the FEL is removed you will have to turn the diverter screw in order to keep the hyd pump from dead heading against the relief. Also the main hyd relief valve is that big nut on the side of the block.
So let me summerize. the seletor valve selects which way the hyd oil flows, either out of the block port to the loader and then to the 3PH or straight through the block to the 3PH. If you have the loader mounted then turn it one direction. If you don't have the loader mounted then turn it the other position.

If you take your loader off, you still have the joystick valve mounted, don't you? Now if you take the joystick valve off, you will have problems just as shaley mentioned. The diverter valve is not for operation when you take the loader arms and bucket off, it's for use when you install a loader onto a tractor or have a tractor without any loader at all. It just makes the hydraulic system more versatile. It also ensures that the 3PH or remote valves will take priority over the FEL. Try it and see if the FEL won't stop when you raise the 3PH. I never have tested it, but it's supposed to provide this function.

You guys with the new fangled TC's always confuse me. My loader joy stick is mounted to the loader arm upright so it stays with the loader. I forgot about the new stuff with the JS in the fender.

So jinman & shaley,

The diverter valve can be thought of as a glorified manifold ? It provides the port connections to facilitate plumbing to front implements. Other than that there is nothing else special about it. The part I still don't understand is why there would be a scenario where you would want to have the 3 PH or rear remotes have priority over the FEL......unless this is some type of safety feature ??

Thanks,

Vic

Vic, I actually had that priority backwards. The FEL will take priority over the 3PH because the diverter valve routes fluid to the FEL first. Only when the FEL is at the open center position will the fluid continue on to the 3PH. Without a joystick installed, the fluid just goes directly to the 3PH port. At least that's the way our Class III tractors work according to the flow diagram in the repair manual.

Thanks jinman, makes more sense now. No special switching going on, just the route that the hydraulic fluid takes through the diverter when FEL is attached.
