I'm looking at building a small workshop in the 12x24 to 16x32 range. I am fairly handy but would like the convenience of a pre cut kit. Anyone gone this direction and have any advice or recommendations on companies, etc.

Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for, but I'm in the process of erecting a 40'x60' steel building from Worldwide Steel Buildings. All columns and roof trusses are fabbed at the factory, I'm just bolting it together. So far I've been pretty impressed with the thought that has gone into the design and workmanship. I'm using their "open web" truss configuration.

My building is subdivided into three separate rooms and has a mezzanine above at 20'x36' area. 16' eave height and a 4:12 pitch makes it about 23' high at the peak.

Steel kits you can order and install from plans. You could utilize some of the raised center aisle barn kits from one the companies selling carports etc. The carport companies are everywhere here. The build on site prefab shed buildings are also. I subbed a custom for one of them a few years ago. Bad bad deal, would highly discourage anyone from doing it.
But their general idea is solid for a small storage building.
Local codes need to be addressed and any other obstacles that govern freedom of land ownership. I would suggest looking a some of the plans in the books for shops and barns. Box stores have several. Kits are going to be stripped down to save every penny. More accountants involved than engineers. I built a shop for a big hunting club and used prefab steel trusses. They were sq tube with brackets for two by's purlins. I really liked how they worked. 6x6 treated posts 2x6 lathing 26 ga residential metal. I have pictures and will try to post them. My shop is oil field pipe, scrap purlins, salvage I and h beam and what was handy. Still has the original dirt floor! I would just do some looking for what works with your plan and budget. You never hear anyone say their shop is too big.

If you are talking about conventional stud wall construction, I don't see the advantage of a kit. Studs are pre-cut already. Access doors are pre-hung. Windows framing is dirt simple. Trusses are pre-built to spec. Just go for it.

I used a kit from these guys to build a 24'x24' barn:

DIY Pole Barns - Pole Barn Kits, Pole Buildings, Packages, Builders, Prices, Plans

They were really helpful and pleasant to deal with. I am very satisfied with the quality as well - the kit included literally everything I needed except the concrete for the floor. They ship just about anywhere pretty cheap and will even connect you with pre-approved constructors in your area. I built it myself from the plans they provided and found them well written.

If stick built I think you would come out cheaper buying material than buying a kit. There is a lumber supplier in Morganton called Wall Lumber that keeps 24' 4/12 pitch truss on site. They run around $50- $59 and could most likely put a kit (or what you would need) together.

Also on HWY 18 South from Morganton to Shelby there is a place call South Mountain Builders. They build the metal structures like Morton only instead of wood truss they use metal truss on 8-10' centers. They are reasonably priced and I will be compairing them to Morton this year for my workshop/polebarn build.

I agree with Kenny. And cheaper as well.

Thanks for the input. I think I will just come up with my own design and go that route. Probably be a bit more fun to do it that way!
