Hello guys, it's been a long time since I posted but I'm having a hydraulic pto problem with my 2005 DK 35. Was tilling food plots and moved from one plot to another. I dropped the tiller into the soil and turned on the pto and nothing happened. I lifted the tiller up slightly and the pto started to turn. Dropped it back down and it stopped. Hydraulic fluid is full. No leaks that I can see. This was an "all of a sudden" event as the pto was working fine 3 minutes earlier. Any thoughts?

Do you have a PTO clutch on the PTO shaft?

Also, does the PTO shaft keep turning once the tiller is on the ground?

Sounds to me that the clutch on the PTO shaft was rusted together and it just free'd up after some use. Now it might need readjustment.

Hello! Possibly debris in the PTO valve? Slip clutch is slipping? I'd check the slip clutch first since it's easier to get too and adjust, and then look at the PTO valves. Even a small amount of debris is enough to restrict the hydraulic flow.

No unfortunately. That would have been too easy.

Sounds like a hydraulic flow issue then. You'll need the workshop manual to see where the PTO valves are.

Had a chance to investigate further and it now appears to be more of an intermittant function rather than weak function. Also appears to be associated with raising and lowering the hitch arms.

By chance do you have a switch that is manual or automatic for the PTO. Sounds like it might be in Auto mode. It would stop when you raise the 3PT.

It has a manual/automatic switch. It is functioning intermittently in both manual and automatic mode. However I did remove debris from inside where the automatic mode microswitch is located. I suspect a loose wire somewhere but for now it is operating normally in both manual and automatic when I tested it in the barn. We'll see when I use it again - probably tomorrow - should be dried out enough from this hurricane that just went through. Thanks for the ideas so far.

There should also be a relay in the system. I had intermittent pto failure on mine..only happened in winter. Replaced relay and no issue for last 18 months. Cheap repair

Intermittent does sound electrical... On my JD 2305, the PTO stopped working in the Spring, usually when I wanted to cut grass after not using it all Winter. It used an electromagnet to suck the solenoid back and allow for fluid flow to the PTO stub. I found that if I didn't use the PTO enough, the solenoid would "stick" in the housing. Removing and sliding the solenoid back and forth a few times was enough to get it going again. I recalled this subsequent Winters and would engage the PTO occasionally just to keep it lubricated. Didn't have any problems after that.

Not saying that's your problem, but if it uses a similar mechanism, it could certainly be electrical.
