I am the pround owner of a new DK 40se, which I beleive was the first 09 delivery from Wallace. Anyway. Should I be able to unload a pallet of wood pellets from a truck? I'm in the process of building a better ballast, I'm currently using a fransguard winch, but when I tried I got the impression that even with the correct ballast I don't stand a chance? Any consensus?

What does a pallet of wood pellets weigh?? If it is 1000lbs, no problem, if it is 3000lbs... I don't think you are going to move it.

well, if that pallet of pellets weighs in around 2200 lbs, then yes, I think you should be able to unload the truck, just make sure you have the ballast. I believe the lift capacity is around 2700 pounds for the KL401. What gave you the impression that you didn't stand a chance?

Pallets are 1 ton, plus the weight of the pallet. When I tried to lift it this weekend the rear end lifted before the pallet moved, I kept lifting a bit and the the pallet moved a little but not at the rate the tires lifted. My winch is about 400lbs and my tires are loaded. I was wondering what other DK experience was, I don't really want to build a real heavy ballast just to find out that it was for nothing. The pellets are the only thing I need to lift that I can't do with the current setup.

Thanks

If you have a bush hog, that might help more because the weight is further back and would have more leverage. Plus there is plenty of room on a bush hog to add temporary wieghts like concrete blocks or something.

Remember that the lift capacity is 2700lbs at pivot pins to full height. I presume you are not needing to lift to full height so your lift capacity should be greater. On the otherhand, a ton 2 feet out from pivot pins (assuming a 4x4 pallet loaded equally) is going to bring you pretty close to the limit. If I were you I'd figure out a temporary solution to the rear ballast problem (add some cinderblocks, barrel of water etc) to see if the loader will lift the pallets effectively.

The other potential solution, depending on your truck configuration, is to have the loader just barely lift the pallet then drive the truck out from underneath and put the pallet down. I've not done that with my DK40 but I used to do that with my CK20 unloading heavy objects and it works well (if a bit slower than optimal). Once the loads are down closer to the ground, your lift capacity and stability are better so you can typically move the load away without problem.

I have a 2008 DK40se with the 401 loader. The wood pellets I unload are around 2,000 lbs per pallet.I have loaded (rim guard)R-4 tires and use a 1,000 lbs ballast box to unload mine.Without the ballast box not a chance,it lifts the rear tires off the ground.coobie
