Kioti DK35
Guys, I have been a regular reader for years. The info I have learned from y'all is remarkable. I have been waiting to re-enter the tractor market until the right tractor comes available, at the right time, for the right price. Well I think I found the tractor, it is a 2003 DK45 with KL249 and a Woods BH9000. Here are my questions: 1) KL249 - what are specs? Some say it is same as Rhino 2049, is this true? 2) BH9000 - really want a thumb. Any suggestions? It looks like Michigan Iron does nice work. Anyone have his thumb?

Appreciate,
E!

Welcome ElDorado.

Maybe one of the dealers will chime in with info on the KL249. Both the loader and tractor are now out of production as far as I know. I cannot recall if anyone active on the board has a DK45 (lots of DK45S and newer models but not that one).

Based on his involvement here, I'd personally trust Michigan Iron to produce a good thumb at a fair price and buy one sight unseen. I would however think through why you want the thumb. I have one on my backhoe and find it not nearly as useful as I thought it would be. For some special applications it is great but for general digging duty it gets in the way as much as it helps.

Island, Thanks for the quick response. I emailed Michigan Iron and they seem willing to work something out regarding a thumb.

I am hoping you are right that a dealer, like Rick Wallace, can point me toward data on the KL249. My Kubota dealer has accused me of analysis paralysis. Guilty as charged!

The DK45 is a 2003 so to speak (not wanting open up the year discussion with tractors). I guess I am assuming the KL249 is also a 2003. I may be under water on this. Maybe the dealer had it on the lot when he sold the tractor originally.

I am worried about the KL249 as it applies to some issues I have read about Kioti brand loaders. Is the KL249 one of "those" loaders. I don't want to buy and find out I have a sub par loader, then what?

I'd ask Michigan Iron if you are going to be talking to him about the BH thumb anyway. He seems quite knowledgable too.

As far as I know the KL249 has not be a problem loader. The issues you are referring to were with the KL120/130 loaders built in Korea. I don't know if the KL249 is a Rhino or another US manufacturer (cannot recall the acronym right now) but I believe it is a US built loader from a good company. Obviously use history and maintenance would be issues with any used loader but I don't think you need to worry about it being a bad design or build.

Here are some published psecs for the KL249 Loader:

Lift Capacity to Full Height at the Pivot Pins - 2050lbs
Lift Capacity to Full Height at the Cutting edge - 1480lbs
Breakout Force at Pivot Pins - 5140lbs
Breakout Force at Cutting Edge - 3695lbs
Rollback force with bucket on the ground - 2266lbs
Maximum Height to Lift Pin - 107.5"
Maximum Lift Height w/ Bucket Level - 102"
Reach at Maximum Height - 21.38"
Maximum Dump Angle - 45 degrees

This loader was not involved in the torque box modification issue.

Hope this helps

Michigan Iron-

Thanks for the data on the loader. I am a data guy and not having it was driving me nuts. Do you have any comments on it being the same as the Rhino?

I will be in touch, hopefully, about the thumb as I said in PM. Tractor has PTO pump for BH and according to dealer rear remote are standard. Do you think I can use the rears to run the thumb? Hope so! Thanks again.

Matt

Many people use rear remotes to control a grapple. Controlling a thumb is a little different as you are not sitting in the driving position when using the BH and may not be able to reach the rear remote controller handle. You could rig a separate cheap valve near the BH controls and power it from the rear remotes or you could power it from one of the stabilizer circuits.

Yes, our hydraulic thumb kits inlcude the extra valve to control the thumb. The thumb circuit would plug into a rear remote circuit. We have put the same thumb kits on the DK45S and DS4510.
