Dealer Do dealers put in some "wiggle room" on prices?

About a year ago I purchased a house on 5 acres and really need a tractor for this and that. I am getting ready to buy my first tractor and I'm a bit nervous. I have never bought a new car, but I know you are never suppose to pay sticker price....is this true about tractors? I am wanting a 2816 gear driven Mahindra. It was the financing options that attracted me, but now it's the tractor that I want. Dealer price is $14,400 with financing, $13,900 cash price. He's given me a couple prices on implements, which might have been discounted. Like a 54" tiller for $1200 and a 4' box blade for $400.

What do you suggest as far as making offers??? Not trying to kill him on price, just kinda looking for the norm. This is my first post, but I have been looking for a couple weeks and everything looks great.

one thing you might do is see if he's got a demo model he can drop the price on. Another way to save a few $$ is to get him to agree in writing that your 50 hour service will be covered for free. (worth about $75 or so just in materials, plus labor)
There is usually some wiggle room, but no idea of how much, as some of that depends on how much interest and property tax he's had to pay having it on the lot.

depending on where you are, if there is another Mahindra dealer within 150 or so miles, see what kind of package deal they would give you.

I am from Wichita and Straub International has all the Mahindras. I called one about 40 miles away and later got a call from the one here in Wichita and told me it that it will not help to shop around because prices among Straub International's are all the same.

Find other dealerships that offer Mahindra, Kabota, Kioti, Deere, NH Massey,etc...

Don't get pressured into feeling that there are no other choices.

you may want to give them the internet address of tractorbynet.com and tell them that technology will allow you to find the lowest price and whether their price is the "best deal" for you----price and service matters but smart-elic salesmen/women can take a hike in this economy!

I know you didn't ask this question, but I would suggest that you seriously consider a Hydrostatic Transmission (HST). Sort of like an automatic transmission in a car. Especially since this is your first tractor and you have 5 acres.

Essentially gear driven tractors are better at moving "ground engaging implements" like a plow. HST is better at most other things.

For a first tractor on 5 acres, an HST might be a far better choice.

Erik and I both know Bill over there quite well. I am sure he is giving you a decent price. My only question is on the box blade. I don't thing 4 ft will cover the wheel track, but maybe that's not that important. It's been a week or so since I last talked to Bill. I am over due for a call.

OK - if you were from KC, I was going to suggest you try Straub in Wichita. OTOH, if you want an eye opener, check the prices at Blue Valley in KC. In November BV quoted me a higher price on a 3316 than I gave Straub for my 3510 - and Straub's hauled it from Larned to Wichita to give it a bath and a quick checking out, then up to Topeka for free.
I also went back and checked my saved mail - the price quoted you is pretty close to what I was quoted in Nov for a 2815 gear, and there was a price increase after I picked my machine up, so I'm pretty sure he's giving you a pretty solid bid. HST will likely run about $1500 higher.
My other advice still stands - check with Bill to see if they have a demo model at one of their other dealerships that he could cut you a deal on.

Thanks for all the advice. I will try and answer some questions and respond to some of the replies. I am pretty set on a gear driven tractor. I do plan on using the tractor to move dirt and run other implements more than anything. I want to dig a pond this summer and fill in a lot of low spots (and build some burms) throughout the property.At this point, I do not plan on mowing/bushhogging with it. I am in the lawn care business and have dedicated mowers that can handle that. As far as the box blade goes....it might have been a 5ft...not real sure about that one. I know Bill was suggesting the 54" tiller and that I questioned about covering the tracks. I have found some pretty good internet deals, but I would really like to stay local if possible.

All dealers if they are smart will put wiggle room in their price, but they need to make some money also.

Take my advice don't just look at price, look at the service from the dealer and the manufacture. We just went and purchased and have had headaches for a while.
