the manual for the 2210 says to not engage/disengage PTO beyond 2000 rpm ?? this would seem to be common sense if you want things to last. Okay, then I noticed when I was shopping last year that the X-series has a "safety" device that stops the PTO every time you back up the tractor?? This would be while mowing at probably 2700 rpms or more....Now is this a double standard or is the X-series have a tougher tranny??

The manual on my LX4 says not to engage above or much above idle speed. Says you run the risk of shearing the shear pins. Makes a helluva racket, too, if you do it at speed.

I think its a really good idea to throttle down before disengaging and to throttle down before engaging. I TRY to remember to do this. Think it's safer and easier on the machinery.

I'm talking about throttling down to slow idle. Gotta do it on the Gravely to engage; won't go in otherwise. Disengage its bush hog at speed and the thing will go on forever. You could probably come back a day or so later and possibly engage the PTO to start the engine on it. Same on my Troy Bilt shredder. Disengage at speed and it goes on forever. Not safe practice.

I owned a 585 last year. With the MMM attached and running, the deck would shut down when changing directions from forward to reverse. However, there is a lift-type switch on the console that would allow the deck to keep cutting in reverse. The switch had to be lifted each time you changed directions from forward to reverse. I didn't need to use it very often but it was handy on occaison.

I didn't have the rear PTO so I don't know if that would be controlled by the same switch or not.

I would bet it's a 'safety' switch & not that the tranny is 'tougher'.

The reverse safety device on most JD consumer equipment can be interrupted by the operator while mowing, etc. I doubt a safety engineer would put avoiding engine damage ahead of saving a limb or life, i.e. slowly revving down an engine when a dangerous condition is occurring. I don't think much of reverse safety switches, but fully understand the reasons for dead-man seat switches having been among the first to arrive upon the scene of a fatal tractor accident a few years ago. On a related topic, my old 445 with a gas fuel-injected Kawasaki twin called for WOT when engaging the PTO. The proper method is dictated by the clutch type and torque curve of the engine. Every diesel with a hyd clutch I have seen calls for low revs engaging and disengaging the clutch.

From my personnel experience on my 4010 I can tell you it is unwise to engage the PTO shaft at much above idle. I sheared the pin in the (drive?)shaft coming off the engine.

I had been rototilling and stopped for lunch. When I went back I forgot to idle down when I got to the garden. I engaged the PTO and ...nothing. ?? I couldn't move forward or backward either (HST). Winched it onto the trailer and took it to the dealer. It was under warranty and they covered it...great dealer. However, the pin is only ~1/8" dia. so I can see how it could break under a shock load.

Hope this helps.

What I was getting at is why would they install such a device if it can damage the machine? (liabilty, duh) and how many of the X's go to the dealer with damage from this device? I do idle when I engage but I've noticed my wife forgets.
