I have a pet steer around four years old. I've never noticed him show much interest in a cow that's in season until today. There he was with his nose right in the business end of a cow that appeared to be entertaining visitors. Has anyone else observed a steer courting?

Hmmm my dog sticks his nose in the “business end” of every female that enters my house. Does that count?

Not unusual at all. Cows occasionally do the same to one another. The reason you don't see it more often is once bull find's the cow, everyone else is afraid of him and don't come near her. I can't say I've seen a steer with botched castration but I have seen geldings that acted like a stud, was aggressive and would carry out the act,but couldn't breed of course.

Just wishful thinking maybe.

RNeumann - that's only slightly embarrassing. Try to be casual about the situation when the dog is buried in the skirt up to his shoulders.

The steer could be a "rig"... one ******** hadn't dropped when castration time happened.

Jax,
I think you've nailed it. I sold the bull last week.
Thanks to everyone.

Back in the early 80's I spent several weekends on a cattle ranch in NM. We were either rounding up and shipping out or moving incoming cattle or range-born calves out to very large pasture areas. All this was still done on horseback, real cowboy stuff, and a highlight of my life. One time, we were pushing a bunch of steers up the ramp to a truck and the foreman yelled over to us to cut out a particular steer. He noticed something in his behavior and said he was a "buller" -- a steer that gave off a female vibe [sort of a gay steer]. The foreman said the other steers would keep trying to mount him until he was injured or dead. We put him in an isolated pen within the truck for his protection.
