Do synthetics reduce friction any better than a Dino oil????? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Wow, your 6000th post Junkman. It was one about oil too. I find that when dino oil or synthetic oil gets on the outside of an oil filter, I can no longer hold the oil filter in my hands without loosing my grip. We call that the friction/slip drop test for oil.

Yes, that is why the oil temp is lower.

Yes and no...

Within each of the oils operating parameters the lubricity is approximately equal. So synthetic lubricates only VERY slightly better than a dino oil.
But synthetic operating paramaters cover a much wider margin. For higher and lower temps, synthetic is much more stable. For higher pressures and thinner film, dino oils may shear where a synthetic will remain. etc. etc. etcc.

So as long as a failure mode for the dino hasn't occured, synthetic isn't much better. It is just that it takes much more to get a synthetic to reach that point of failure mode.

So with the maybe yes maybe no explanation, the lower operational oil temperatures in the crankcase must mean that syn dissipates heat much better than dino then. Wonder why that is?

Hey SkyPup,

When any substance/liquid or metal, heats up, the molecules move faster.

Therefore, IMHO, The molecules in the synthetic oils, react slower to a heat source than do the Dino Oils.

Have a nice day,

I got ya, dino oils just get hotter and hotter 'cause they have much faster molecules than syn does. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

It is also because in certain extreme areas, the capability of the oils is exceeded creating more heat. i.e. ring to cylinder wall contact or main bearings. In reality, on each and every stroke there is a slight amount of that shear that I was talking about. The shear is less with synthetic so the result is less heat.
