I used to know exactly how much my purchase was before going to the cash register. It's surprising how many mistakes I picked up on, often in my favor. I got lazy for a while but am getting back into the habit; to exercise my mind as much as anything. Last week I got home and noticed that they had scanned an item twice. When I returned this week I brought my receipt and they gave me twice my money back, plus a dollar.

What really peeved me though is that I knew the total was off yet I still overlooked it- plus I was in the speedy checkout and the extra item would have put me over the 14 article max. It makes me wonder how many times I've been over or undercharged.

I check the receipts for double charges. The only errors I ever had was when the software at the grocery store was on the fritz and it simply screwed up every single scan the checkout gal made. What a PITA for the store - they had to go to manual entry until the software glitch was corrected.

I've very rarely NOT checked my receipt for errors. I have occasionally caught an error in the store's favor and got it corrected, but I've also caught errors in my favor and got them corrected.

Errors of any kind have been relatively rare except for one store. K-Mart used to have a store (Super K-Mart) in Corsicana, TX, that routinely overcharged. I know in one case they overcharged for a package of cheese, corrected it when I called it to their attention, and a week later I bought another identical package of cheese and it still rang up at the higher price. Neighbors told me they'd all had the same experience. At that time K-Mart also had their distribution facility in Corsicana, so K-Mart was the major employer in that little town. But they closed both the distribution center and the store a year or so later.

I always check the receipt. Most of the local stores policy is to give you one of the overcharged item free. (I love freebies) The state of NC does scanner checks too. Fail too many items and store gets a fine.

I catch the mistakes as they make them, I stop them and ask "is that the right price?". I do catch a fair number of mistakes...

I keep track of what the bill should be ( at least a general idea) and if its different I find out why. Again - I catch lots of mistakes.

(1) Number of scans equals number of items. That was 12 items, not 14.
(2) Items match what I bought. I'm sorry, that package of boloney is NOT a roll of toilet paper.
(3) Total is in the ball park of what I rang up in my head. $124 +/- a buck. Of course the store discounts sometimes throw me off.
