I went in my dealer today to order some parts and a guy brings in a little Stihl chainsaw. I listen as he tells the service writer it ran fine but it had dirt all over it and wouldn't cut well. He asked them to clean the saw and replace the chain. I don't know about the rest of you but I'm thinking if you can't clean your own saw and replace the chain you should just pay someone to cut your wood. :confused2:

Huh? I thought I could delete a thread in a short time. I just realize there is a chainsaw forum to stick this in so I was going to delete and repost there.

Doesn't matter (re: the forum)...

I take my little Stihl Mini-Boss to my local shop about once a year for a maintenance 'cleaning & chain sharpening. He does a great job for a small price.

Heck, I have 9 'tons' of wood delivered every October so that it can cure over the Summer months. It's been cut to length & split. I just stack it.

So... what's your point?

Nope. I take care of my saws, there isn't a whole lot to it.. Some people don't have time and or don't like to mess with 2 cycle engines and it doesn't cost a whole lot for a shop to it so I understand they just need the thing to run and if it doesn't they can make a phone call and blame some one else if it doesn't..

A stiff brush, a flat screwdriver, and the blow gun on the air hose. No need to pay someone to do that!

To each their own. Not everybody has the knowledge, time, or interest, to do even the simple maintenance. It would be interesting though, to know if the shop replaced the chain or just sharpened it, and if he brings it there everytime that the chain gets dull... or comes off the bar.
You would be surprised at how many people have run saws for years yet don't know that you have to take down the rakers as the teeth get worn down.

After 6 years I thought my chainsaw needed a tuneup and thorough cleaning. Came back from the shop running like new and almost looking like new accept for all the scratches and dings I put in it during those 6 years. $40 plus tax which included a new spark plug and air filter.

Fair enough price in my estimation. :)

"To each, their own" is right! That is all that counts. ;)

I have an Echo chain saw I bought brand new. It comes with a 5 yr warranty so any issues I take it to the local dealer and have it taken care of at no cost. The tensions screw for the chain stripped on me last month and had that taken care of.

I do however clean, sharpen the blades and top off fuel and oil after each use. I use my chainsaw for general upkeep of 43 acres of wood. I might splurge and buy me a second Echo chain saw with as much cutting as I do.

when I was doing repair work for the public, I would give the saw or mower or what ever I was working on a good cleaning when the repair was done. sometimes the customer would ask what was wrong and I would tell them "oh I just cleaned it up" :)

To each his own. I never took one of my chain saws back to a dealer. However, when my brother bought a place in the country and bought a new chain saw while he was still living in town, he took that chain saw back to the dealer when it got in bad shape. The dealer told him they couldn't warranty it because it was obvious that the chain had been run right down into the dirt. My brother told them, "I didn't expect you to warranty it, but for what I needed to do, it was worth it to get it into the dirt and pay you to take care of it." If I remember right, it was $50. And yes, he did know before it he did it, what was going to happen when you run it right down into the dirt.
