Mowing do you have to run rpm high for mowing? or am I wasting fuel?

I constantly adjust rpms as I am mowing my fields. Grass height, thickness, cut quality and speed all factor into the equation.

I USED to mow at ~80% or 90% throttle. It was much quieter with no appreciable degradation in cut.

Then, I re-habilitiated my lawn and I have a very thick, lush, heavy grass that gets watered every other day.

Since I bag my grass with the Kubota bagger, I noticed immediately that the bagger chute started getting clogged all the time.

Since mowing at WOT, I've noticed the chute stays clear. I don't think it is as much a matter of deck/blade speed, but a logorithmic increase amount of air moving through the chute by the bagger's impeller fan driven off the rear PTO.

So:
Bagger=WOT
No bagger=Whatever keeps the mow quality up.

I run my BX very close to wide open throttle, or about 3250 rpms. Wide open on mine is about 3400, so I back it down just a little. If your grass is green and pretty thick, you will get a better cut by getting the blades turning faster. When August comes around and maybe things get hotter and dryer, it may be less critical.

I have no idea what rpm I am running at.....no tach on my BX, I have to go by the tone of the motor. I don't suppose any one knows what the rpm range is on a BX2200?

If you have the exact same motor D905 as mine, Then I am going to guess the range is 1190 to 1200 up to 3420 rpms. I noticed that when moving lever, it doesnt take much to rev it to 2200 rpms which is less then halfway travel. between 2200 rpms to 3200 goes nearly WOT. Between 2200 and 3200 is what I use for working with BX, like you say, go by sound. I'd say that in this range you should be safe for what RPMS you need for cutting.

It's a judgement call from here whether we are wasting feul or making engine last longer. faster, slower, WOT, rated RPMS, etc... If you guys are not sure, going by the manual first is a good idea until you get to know your BX. Then you can start adjusting to your needs, quality, etc.
