I've never used eBay but have a bronze Fredrick Remington "Coming Through The Rye" statue. I am planning to sell it. Any tips on how I do this on eBay? I suppose the likelyhood of someone far away purchasing it is pretty good and it weighs about 300lbs. Do I pay shipping and crating or is this negotitated? Do you just say "best offer" or establish a price? Thanks, Rat...

I've bought on ebay but never had sold. I have a friend who shut down his whatnot shop and now deals exclusively on ebay.

And there was an article in the Dallas Morning News about how online auctions usually bring at least thirty percent more than conventional ones. They said it was because of the size of the audience.

I believe it's because people in the privacy of their own world are living a fantasy. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

But you are probably doing better by going online to sell such a treasure.

You either run your item as an auction with the item going to the highest bidder, or you can run a Buy-It-Now listing that has a set price. There are other factors you must also consider such as Reserve/No Reserve; Starting Bid price, etc.

From the sounds of your questions, you don't seem to have visited the site or used it much at all. I suggest taking a peek and getting a feel for how these auctions work.

As far as shipping goes, usually the BUYER pays the shipping. I suggest getting a rough idea what it would cost to ship such an item across the country and include within your description that shipping could cost up to $XXX depending on your location.

Gatorboy hit the nail on the head.

If you need to get at least $xxx for your item, you'll need a reserve price.
Once that is reached, it goes to the highest bidder.
Good luck.

We sell a lot of tractor stuff on ebay. When we first started selling on ebay we set our prices at the minimum we had to have for the item. This works some of the time. Now we just start every auction at 1.00 with no reserve for some reason people bid like crazy on stuff when it is priced like this to start with. I guess even though you are not physically there the people still act like they are at an auciton and dont want the other guy to out bid them.. We rarely loose out with this method most of the time we get way more money for the item then we ever thought we would get. With the tools ebay gives you it is very easy to let the customer figure out what his shipping cost will be when they are looking at your auction if you set it up right they can enter there zip code on the auciton page and get an instant price of what the shipping will cost them and take that into there bidding consideration. You can also add a handling charge at this time for crating purposes that will come up when they figure there shipping cost.

Is this the same item you are going to be selling? /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hi,

Like everybody else said, go visit EBay and get a feel for how these auctions work. Maybe a friend or neighbor who lives near you has some EBay experience, and could help you with the listing.

I found a Remington being sold right now, ending in about an hour. There are 8 bids currently, which shows quite a bit of "action."

EBay Current Auction for Remington Bronze

You say it weighs "about 300 pounds." You had better get it weighed. If it really does weigh 300 pounds, it is going to have to go via a freight service, and may cost a couple of hundred dollars. For this item, excellent packaging and insurance will be important. The buyer pays for it. The one on EBay right now is charging $26 for shipping. You need to make this point quite clear to the buyers.

I agree that you should start at a very low price. This pulls in many bidders, and increases the chance of more bidding against each other.

Set a "reserve" for what you will be happy with, or as your "absolute minimum." I also am often amazed how much items bring on EBay. It is definitely a "sellers market" most of the time.

Good luck!

Rat -

I'd suggest you include a good picture or two of the actual item you are selling, too. People like to see what they're bidding on. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
