John Deere 5065e
So I posted a while back about air restriction warnings on my 5065e and the events that followed. Best I can tell, I just ran out of fuel because the gauge got stuck at 2/3 full and I am new to the tractor. After getting it running, I watched the gauge again and once it hits 1/2, it jumps back up and stays. I'm guessing this is an electrical problem such as a short in what I am calling the sending unit. It is the part that goes into the tank that I am referring to. I'm no mechanic or electrician(or possibly even adequately bright.... lol), so I dont know how this things works and if there is something simple to check or fix this. I havent called to see how much the part is because I doubt I will like the answer. Has anybody dealt with this before?

Is the tractor new or just new to you? I am assuming it is new to you based upon having issue you are trying to fix rather than a dealer do it. All fuel gages I have ever seen are very simple with a float that as it moves there is some electrical circuit having it's voltage or resistance changed. It is not impossible the float is loose or is failing due to some damage or there is trash in the tank that is floating in the tank catching the float.

I've had it for about a year and I THINK it is a 2016 model.

When I pulled the tank, the float got stuck a little, but once I put 10 gallons in and checked the gauge, it acted normally. This put it over the half tank mark though. I am thinking it is a short, because when it hits half it jumps up and stays at a spot, so that doesn't sound like just a stuck float.

Do you know what is the part # ?
Hard to pin down in jdparts, as so many models of the 5065E. One with cab, sender is $24, another is a reed sender at $104. Nothing appears to be consistent..

I have no idea which part number it would be or how to find it. Knowing my luck, it will be the most expensive.

a sender normally has three wires, a ground, a reduced current power, and the signal ...
what you are describing is -normally- a problem with the level sender unit ..

If the sender is mounted on top of the tank, with a tube that hangs down, it's called out as reed switch type. About $100. P/N SJ24593 I haven't looked at one yet. You mentioned a float. Can you see the float inside the tube?

That sounds like it is correct. The tube has a couple 3/4" holes near the top, I think, opposite of each other. When I took the unit out, I could see the float as it went past the holes.
