It's just a code reader. Save your money.

Most scan tools like this are simply that. They are a tool that will scan you vehicle and list any trouble codes. Most codes can be cleared by the tool as well. They give you an idea where to look for repairs. Some codes cannot be cleared and will require a trip to the dealer to have the part replaced and code cleared. There are many code readers on the market for $100 or less. Most auto parts stores will even use their scan tool to read your trouble codes for free.

There is a big difference between a $100 scan tool and a multi thousand dollar diagnostic computer a dealer or repair shop uses.

A scan tool can save you money if you have automotive knowledge. I have an Actron scan tool myself. It reads and can reset many codes. It gives me a starting point of where to look if the check engine light comes on and many times I can replace the part and reset the code saving me hundreds of dollars over what a garage or dealer would charge. It all depends on what codes come up whether I should tackle it or not.

I have an actron scanner as well. I can't remember the model, but it was around $160 and will read some live data. It also does some OEM codes not found on generic scanners. It is okay, but would like a little more. Autoenginuity seems interesting, but not sure about real world effectiveness. I have also thought about a OTC genesys for a little more money. Have heard good things about the OTC and it is the same as the Matco determinator. Another PC based one that costs more is AutoEase (I think).

I realize they have been around for a while, but from what I see their tools aren't what they used to be. Mostly stuff outsourced to Asia now, sure doesn't stop them from charging though.
