Does the ground PTO work when the the clutch is pressed in?

Just got the Massey are restored and hooked the Brush hog up to it and messing around a bit.

This pto doesn't work like we thought it should it has ground pto and engine pto.


the ground pto is what we thought you ran it in but guess not.

The engine pto never stops thought it was supposed to with the clutch in.

Also to get it in engine pto you have to shut the tractor off is this normal?

You don't say what model it is, but is probably a 2-stage clutch. So either you're not pushing the clutch pedal down far enough to engage the PTO, or there is an adjustment issue.

I believe the ground drive matches the ground speed, when moving. So if not moving, it will not be turning. A buddy of mine had a, I believe 35 with ground drive PTO. He loved it for running the hay conditioner. If the Alsike he mowed for hay wrapped on the rollers, he said he would just back up, reversing the PTO, and it would unwrap itself most of the time.

How would I tell if it's got a 2 stage clutch

after looking up more info I never tried pushing the clutch in part way.

G'day PTO clutch should work right at the bottom of the pedal stroke, transmission clutch should work part way down. You may need to adjust the clutch to have minimal freeplay or the pto clutch may be frozen.

Ground driven PTO is just that. The PTO turns only when the tractor is moving and the PTO speed is proportional to ground speed and independent of engine speed.
