Hello every one,

I have a GT 2544 and I changed the transmission oil and filter, and I got 5 qts. of oil in the transmission and every time I check it, it shows way over full.
When I drained the old oil out I got 5 & 3/4 qts. the rest of the oil would be in the old filter, that should be about 6 qts. ( manual says it holds 6qts )

So right now I have 5 qts. in the transmission and the dipstick is showing over full.
I drove the tractor around quit a bit, and then used reverse a few times, and still showing over full.

Should I go a head and add the rest of oil to make it the 6 qts. like the manual says 6 qts.??

Hope there is some body on the forum that has serviced the transmission on the 2544 that knows for sure !

I have read a lot of good information on this forum, so this is the best place to ask!!

Thanks for any info.
Bernie,

I never could get an accurate read on the trans dipstick on my 2544. I know ~6qts drained out from the factory and I always filled it with somewere between 5-6qts of Shell Rotella-T 15w40 (but that's another topic!) If the unit was grossly overfilled, oil would come out the top vent hose on the differential housing.

Hi Joel,

Thanks for the quick reply, Shell Rotella-T 15W40 is what I used, suppose to be very good.

I think I will go ahead and add the rest of the 6th qt.

Thanks for the help!! ( I feel better about adding the 6th qt. now )

Thanks Bernie,

Bernie, I think that extra quart comes into play if you swap the filter on the trans. If you were just doing a drain and fill and leaving the filter in place, you'd probably only get out 5qts or so. Regardless, I hear you on the dipstick. It's a tough read!!

I thought that too, but I'm not so sure after changing the fluid on my GT3235.

Supposedly it's 5.5 qts, but when I pull the filter and and drain, I added 5 qts and was over the fill mark.

So I drained 0.5 qt and cut grass (1.5 hrs) and checked... it was still above the full mark, but not by as much.

In the end, my 5.5 qt trans probably takes a little over 4 qts with filter change.

Thanks Bernie,

I'd be really careful, I hear damage can be done when when overfilling (the manual says that too).

Per Cub, the 2500's hold 5.7qts and the 3000's hold 6.0qts. That's total system capacity (filter included). The oil sump on these is the large differential housing. The housing is open at the top via it's vent hose. If you did grossly overfill, oil will puke out the top vent hose. If that hose was plugged or pinched in some way, your next path of least resistance would be the axle seals.
