Propane companies are good at finding tings to charge you with. I looked at getting a tractor tank out here to charge my 94 Ford LP truck and my lift trucks, without goin to town. They had somany little fees that it was unbeleiveable. I had a dispute wit hthe gas company i had dealt with and wasnt gonna fill the big tank so I used my 100 pound tank. I told the next dealer that had all the little rules on dicconnecting a house tank that it was a Propane cutting rig tank on my burn table no problems or charges.

In your living room? The propane tank use I am talking about if for a corner fireplace. ;)

yep. I call it a fireplace :p I'm a bit behind the times, and use wood in it. Even cook there on occasion

I can certainly see why a propane company would want to protect themselves from litigation by limiting transportation of large LP bottles. The state is clearly delivering the liability to the propane vendors, when it says that it's up to their discretion. In a day when a drunk driver can sew the bar tender and bar owner for serving him when it's their discression not to, why wouldn't a propane company want to cover their six?

I think it's less about generating profits, as trying to keep from getting you're pants sued off you.

And it's a ligitimate concern. Some PU trucks have very shallow beds, and a 100.b propane cylinder's center of gravity could sit above the railing. Even on a deep bed PU truck, if the tank is not well secured, it could be josteled out.

Do all of us that use the roads a favor, build you'self a containment rig for you're PU truck that securely holds the 100LB propane tanks. Take the plans to the propane shop and have them approve them before building. Then build it, secure it to you're PU truck, and safely transport you're propane tanks.

State of MD has the same transport law. Unfortunately for me, there was no way around it.

The reason in Australia for not being able to lay a 100# / 45kg LPG bottle down is because the blow off vent is pointing out the side of the vehicle . If the bottle heats up in the sun and the valve opens to vent the excess pressure , gas will come out in liquid form , which would be a hazard . If the bottle is vertical it is less likely to become a hazard as it will vent skywards as a vapour , even though LPG is heavier than air and will fall , it will be scattered and not concentrated . Our gas companies allow us to transport the bottles vertically as long as the trucks headboard is tall enough to do the task safely and ratchet straps are used .

As a kid working at a gas station that sold propane I used to hate seeing guys roll in with three to four of those tanks in their trucks. Those things are heavy, and in PA in January, you really don't want to be standing out there filling tanks.

fast forward many years, now I roll into the same place with my 100lb tanks and smile as the young kid comes out to fill them. Back then noone cared if you laid em down, made more sense than standing them up where they could fall over. Only an idiot would let them roll around in the bed. Now they make me stand them up to leave the station. I get to the exit of the station, pull the truck over, and promptly lay em down. I have 6x6 and 4x4s there to keep them from moving and only have to drive about 6 miles to get home.

In my area they used to charge a rental fee for the tanks, and in a years time you could buy a tank for the fees. Now they have fatboys, 250lb that they deliver to your house with no rental fee, but you must sign a contract to get the propane filled from them only. I keep using my 100lb tanks until I believe they are unsafe, then I'll switch. Funny, the propane price always increases when a cold snap hits. It is also funny how those propane trucks fly up and down the roads when the cold snaps hit "topping off" tanks of people who are on contract.
