Last night I was in my garage and I noticed the pair of red, white, and blue Bicentennial license plates Michigan issued back in 1976 that I had saved when they expired. It got me to thinking that it used to be I could get a pair of real metal plates for maybe $25 per year, and today here in Michigan you have to keep the same plate on a vehicle practically forever and you pay $100-200 for a square inch stick on tab to renew your registration. What a ripoff, not to mention that means we can't get a new number every year...

Are there any states that still issue a new metal license plate every year?

In PA, you keep the same plates for 5 years (IIRC) and get the annual stickers.

I just registered my trailer in Maine. it cost $90 dollars for 5 years. Thats $18 dollars a year. It's all legal and all. Heres the web site: Trailer Registrations for Individuals and Fleets Countrywide - MaineTrailerRegistrations.com
. . . Just a thought with prices rising and all . . .John

Here in Michigan, since about 1998 or so, trailer plates have been permanent. I paid a one-time $75 fee for my utility trailer when I purchased it new in 2009. Before permanent trailer plates, my 250 pound 4X8 utility trailer registration was about $18 a year. The new one weighs 3X that, so probably would have been $45 per year. A $75 permanent plate is a bargain.

In The Great State of New York, You pay throught the nose for trailer registration and then a yearly inspection charge too Think it totaled 62 dollars a year, Outragous! thats why i went to another state to register. You keep the same plate for 5 years and no inspection . . .John

I've been interested in the Maine registration thing.

However here in Fairfax County Va, where the trailer sits, I just had to fill out a form saying if I still had the trailer in Ffx Co.

Not sure what would happen if I had said no and left it sitting in my front yard but w/ Maine plates.

It depends what you are registering. If you are getting into class A or B area, but a regular joe driving a car, truck, motorhomes under 26000lbs, you pay for 2 years of registrations based on weight plus yearly inspections. There are 2 plates on a vehicle. inspections is another whole ballgame. To the average joe - its invisible how it works. All he would care if it pass or fail.
Trailers- its a yearly registration with one plate and you get a tiny sticker to put in the corner and the registration is prorated. Problem with prorated fee is that if you walk in a mobile DMV office, you most likely will get an idiot who tries to make you pay full price for full year if you register trailer later in year. I always have to either do it online, or go in person in a real DMV office or stand my ground and wait till they bicker among themselves before giving in. (this happened to me more then once!)
NYS is playing a new game now where you can keep old plates and pay less for registration or pay for new designs and pay bit more. IF you dont want to change your plate numbers, you have to pay close to vanity plates fees..:confused2:

good grief!!!:(

We get the stickers each year when pay yearly DMV fees. That has been at least since the '60's; a great find is a 1960's car with original black plate(black plate with yellow letters/numbers).

And as radiosman mentioned, numerous vanity plates are available, for an extra yearly charge $$$...

Here, pay the fees, or else pay for a non-operational status. If you do not non-op, there will be all kinds of late/penalty fees. Have seen folks sell a car or pickup just for the cost of a few years back fees...
