We had thick cut pork chops for dinner tonight.

Wife wants to give the bones/scraps to the dogs.

My thinking is that's not the best idea.

Any opinions?

I am reminded on a regular basis by the lovely Mrs_Bob that she is not only smarter and wiser than I but is also better looking too, and sometimes that comes out at in a shrill voice at a volume that would scare a mastadon into extinction. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif So just out of the experience that comes with nearly 20 years of marriage (to the same woman) I would generally side with the female for ANY domestic matter.

HOWEVER, in this case I believe you are far wiser than your lovely Mrs_Richard. Pig bones are too soft, can be easily shattered by a dog, and can lodge in the throat and create vet bills that will make a monthly Blue Cross & Blue Shield payment seem like a bargain. Don't do it.

Scraps Ok bones probably not a good idea

We give our dogs all the COOKED bones we get from dinner. My mom raised dogs (collies) and did the same thing, now at 44yrs of age I have not had any problems doing that and I've had dogs all my life.

We never give cooked bones as they tend to shatter (jagged edges) unlike raw bones which just break. So far all we've had from the jagged pieces were cuts of the tongue and roof of the mouth, but if swallowed they could potentially create a real problem.

As for the scraps, we feed them all the time, but have one dog with a glass stomach that has to go out in the middle of the night if he gets too much fat.

We had a pork chop bone get stuck in the mouth of our Pomeranian. Could not tell that something was wrong until she walked around with her mouth open for a while. Could not take it out by hand, had to use a pliers, but everthing was ok. That was the last time she received a pork bone. Chicken bones have always been off limits. Do not know why but growing up on the farm, the dog and the cats got all of the scraps, including whatever bones there were. Maybe the dogs were smarter then, that or the mutts were able to handle anything, unlike the purebreds we all have now.

Your dog and veterinarian will both love you, but both will be for all the wrong reasons. Don't give dogs bones that they can shatter and get caught in there throats or even worse, that can perforate the intestine. By the time that you realize that something is wrong, it might be too late. I give my dogs sterilized bones that come from the pet shop and sometimes put peanut butter inside of them for an additional treat, but never bones that I am not certain of. Dogs chewing on bones will also wear there teeth down quickly. Have you ever seen a dog with false teeth? ..... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I was always told that you should never feed dogs bones that begin with 'P'..... like poultry and pork.
