Dogs Outside

How about those electronic fences? I have neighbors with them and they seem to work. Perhaps not so great with big tuff dogs but if you started a pup out and it learned those limits it would work or even with sensitive dogs like Goldens and Collies and such even if adult when you train them to it. I have a huge fenced area--chain link across the back so they can see to the woods and pond and stuff but I wish I had gotten them an Invisible fence.
I hit a dog on a motorcycle when I was about 16, dog recovered only to get run over again--by someone else, I slid down the road on my butt and it tore my pants off. Two girls from my Catholic high school were driving home from school behind me and they picked me up off the ground and since I had also put a big dent in my helmet I was not to sure about who or where I was or who they were. They only lived a few blocks from the school. Their dad picked up my bike and brought it to my dad. I still have a scar on my rear and since I was not supposed to be on that road with the bike I later got another bout of rash back there from a belt. I love dogs but they need to be restrained in all but the most remote locations, my simple opinion. J

I was out biking with a freind when I was about twelve. This freind was terrified of dogs, anything from a chihuahua up, so imagine her teror when we were chased by a german shepard. She did pretty well initially, just speeded up alongside me and just when I thought we were home safe, the dog ran around to her side and was nipping at her ankles. Well, forget it, her response to that was to cut her bike across my path. She stayed up but I went down and slid about ten yards in nothing but a tank top and shorts. Had a serious case of road rash. The dog ran off, looking over his shoulder and I swear he was thinking ...'oops', as I was screaming bloody murder. I couldn't think of enough bad things to say about her or he dog. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

We actually have a command for that! If I say "Privacy," the dogs move to the hallway just outside the bedroom. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif We can still hear them panting on the other side of the door, but at least they give us that much space! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

On the other hand, one of my co-workers had a dog that would sit at the side of her bed and imitate her sounds during intimate moments! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif Till the dog died, she and her husband were unable to conceive!

Chris -- We do "home inspections" by having the family come to us. We could care less what somebody's house and yard look like, but consider it critically important that the entire family wants the dog and reacts well with it. Also, our four goldens have very different personalities. Seeing which one of our dogs they bond to tells us a lot about the type of dog that would fit into their family.

TresCrows -- I'm with you on the controlling your dog thing. Few things irk me as much as a loose dog (usually unneutered) roaming around making trouble. Realizing that it's not the dog's fault -- but in the way it was raised -- I generally deal with the owner directly. If I get a ration from them, I let the animal control folks lay a few hefty fines on them. If a sense of responsibility won't change the owner's behavior, hitting them in the wallet usually does.

My dogs are voice controlled, and I use words taken out of Star Trek (mostly Klingon or Tamarian) so in case a passing tourist tries to get them to do something (like come to them in the road), the dogs just look at them like they're speaking Greek. The bike/car/hiker chasing thing just doesn't happen with my pack.
