Tonight, my oldest son, Paul, joined the ranks of diploma-carrying high school graduates. He's all excited to get out of the house and move in with some friends about an hour away. He plays bass guitar in a band that is getting a pretty good fan base in the area and they want to make a good stab at making it big. He's put many job applications out there and he's willing to work anywhere he can, as he realizes that the music won't pay the bills.

College? He's going to try the music first. There are many good paying jobs up here which don't require college degrees and he really wants to be a musician. To be honest, he's really good at it. He received the Louie Armstrong Jazz award for his role in the high school jazz band. His current band has been selected to play at the SonShine music festival in Wilmar, MN. I guess I know where we're going for vacation this year!

We're proud of him and hope he can make it doing what he loves.

Congratulations and Best of luck to your Son in his musical ambitions. When you first start out playing music, you need a job and or skills to fall back on to pay some bills in slow times. Ken Sweet

We are a musical family. "Marveltone" is the name I put on the custom all tube guitar amplifiers and effects I build. I got him started on guitar and he took off after that and has far surpassed me in skill. He also plays flute (Grew up listening to my Jethro Tull albums) and wants to incorporate some flute into some of their music. Did I mention they're a hard core metal band? Not my kind of music, but at least they're very good at it.

Yes Ken, Paul's aware of the need for income. He's been filling out job apps for the last month for whatever he can get. We'll see what happens. My sister and brother-in-law live in the town he's moving to and they said they'll serve as a safety net for him. It's good to have family nearby.

Safety nets are good. Especially Family. A young neighbor boy was brought by my office about 10 yrs ago by his father. The Dad asked me if I would "Mentor" his Son in the shop area. Long story short, I did that for a few years while he was being home schooled and he now has a band and a bus is touring all over doing original songs and has put out a couple CD's. They do "Progressive Gospel" and it is a trip to listen to. He incorporates a bagpipe in some of the songs. Here is a sample of Randell and Chord Of 3. Ken Sweet

Good video, Ken! I like their sound. I think mentoring is great, and while I'm not in any kind of official mentoring program, I've also taken an occasional teen under my wing, be it baptismal sponsor or guitar lessons/ear to bend, or just plain sticking up for them when they're having trouble. You never know what kind of influence you can have on some of these kids and young adults. A little encouragement and guidance can go a very long way.
