The big boys (i.e. Nationwide, Geico, allstate, state farm) are over priced. The best rates would be from an independant agent. I use the one at my local AAA.

For liability, we carry $500k personal injury ($1 million per accident) and $100k property damage. That is Texas's standard amounts.

Jim, I don't know about that word "standard"; maybe that's right, and that's a much safer amount to carry, but the "minimum" required by law is a lot less, as you can see on the Texas Department of Insurance website.

Bird, I don't remember having upped my coverage level, but Kathy did most of the negotiations and that's probably why I assumed it was standard when it is not. I'm sure that extra coverage doesn't cost much because our rates are so low, but you are absolutely right. Texas does not require that much coverage as referenced in your link. I'll get this all right sooner or later.

Jim, I didn't think anyone was supposed to understand an insurance policy.:D I probably need to raise the liability limits on my auto insurance, too. I'm still carrying $100k/$300k/$100k and with current prices it's probably smarter to carry the higher limits, as you are doing.
