Don't fell trees alone!

i think id have to wear those pocket knives down to nubs wittleing away at that trunk before i cut my leg off.

i mean the dude that had his arm pined was in ROCK! you can chip away rock with a pocket knife....

but pinned between 2 trees? comon!

i would say felling trees alone is certianly something to be carefull about, but more than that, TELL SOMEONE WERE YOURE GOING AND WHAT YOUR DOING AND WHEN YOU EXPECT TO BE BACK

this isnt rocket science

When I was in Rehab (after a stroke), my room mate had been hit on the back of his neck by a tree branch. He and his son (I think it was his son) had been doing some trimming and felling.

He was in a wheel chair, no use of one arm an limited in the other arm. He didn't get much better in the 6 weeks I was there.

Only thing saved his "life" was the son and a neighbor with a cell phone.

When I brush cut, I'm out of sight from the house...my wife insists I have a walkie talkie or cell with me.
If I'm home alone, and on the tractor...I have a cell.

Now, since my stroke, I have a bad limp and I do trip over a lot of things...there's no using a chain saw anymore for me. But for you lads who still do the work...have a helper close at hand...just in case!

Years ago I delivered firewood to an elderly man that had one leg. He had been working alone in the woods & got his truck stuck. It had a hand throttle so he put it in gear & was putting stuff under the turning wheels & slipped on the ice & got pulled under the wheels. Hours later when he didn't come home friends rescued him. His leg was badly damaged & frozen thus amputated.

Sometimes, some of us don't have any choice. It's like most other things though, if you're careful and plan what you are doing and take precautions, you're going to be OK .... most of the time. Most of the ag related accidents around here seem to occur when someone does something that's just downright DUMB!!!!!

A cell phone or radio CAN be a good idea. A friend of our's husband, who is a ranch manager, was moving hay, answered his cell phone and didn't realize he still had his hand on the FEL joystick until the big, round bale came off the forks backwards, bounced back across the hood, crushing the canopy and trapping him in the seat. In that case the cell phone got him into trouble but it also got him out of troble with nothing more than some severe bruising.

That's why I paid extra for MSL FEL-- one less opportunity to run into trouble.

What do you expect , we all do stuff like that but you shouldn't ,but usually it's our own fault .
I'm a logger i spend 12 hour days on my own 10 miles from any road , itry to take someone along but you can't always (my wife hates it).

I agree, I'm not judging the old guy -just relating his story. I also cut wood alone, 150 miles from home & not expected home for a few days. MikeD74T
BTW -What's a Cat man doing with a Cummins logo?
