Don\'t forget to say thanks.....

With all the postings of pets that have passed away, this post brings particular tears to my eyes. A little more than a week ago, my veterinarian died suddenly. He was only 56 years old and the picture of health. He did everything that you are supposed to, eating properly, exercise, etc. Unfortunately, after breaking up a dog fight between his two dogs, he had a massive heart attack and died shortly after. We have been close friends for over 30 years and he took very good care of my animals for me during that time. We appreciate what the veterinarian does for us in keeping our animals healthy, but do we express our appreciation enough? I know that I have always thanked him profusely, even if it were giving me the sad news that there was nothing more that could be done. During this Holiday season, take the time to let the veterinarian and the staff know that you appreciate what they do. Without them, we wouldn't have our loving friends with us for as long as we do. They are the real hero's in the pet world.

Re: Don\'t forget to say thanks.....

MrsAndyM is at the vet right now with Allie. I always feel the need to jump in to defend the veterinarians when people exclaim how expensive it is. They never stop to think how many times more expensive a similar procedure would cost if it were performed on themselves. It costs a lot of money to open a veterinary practice, with no where near the profit that people would think. It's more of a labor of love.

Junkman, sorry about the loss of your friend...

I can't help but think if we all spent each day as if it were our last on the planet, and also as if it were the last day for those we interact with (especially those we really care about) the world would be a better place...

All I can think to say, after reading your post is...I hear ya'

We are sorry for the loss of you friend.
You are so right about veterinarians. We have had the same vet for over 30 years also. I am sure without him the time we have had with our pets would have been a lot less. If fact just this morning (the day after thanksgiving) there was a message from our vet giving us the lab results on our sick cat. You can tell when a vet really cares about the animals he treats.

Edit: Two hours after this post - after office hours - he called to get an update on our pets condition. Wow, he is good.

Thanks to your post Junkman, I do appreciate him a little more! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Re: Don\'t forget to say thanks.....

Junkman, I'm very sorry about the loss of your friend!! What you say is 100% correct. People are very quick to complain about their veterinarians, but if you have a good vet, they are there when you need them.

My wife and I are very lucky, the animal hospital we use is owned by a wonderful lady vet, and she hired two equally wonderful lady vets. They treat both small pets and livestock, and they give all of our animals as much love as they do medicine. Believe it or not, all of our dogs, and even all of our cats LOVE going to the vet. We call all of the vets their "Aunts", becuase they show them so much love. They kiss our dogs, cats, horses and goats while they examine them, and the animals respond to that, letting them do whatever is neccessary. All three of them take turns on being on 24 call. This past spring when one of our newborn goats was born premature, I called the vet on call at night. I stayed with the newborn for over 24 hours until we knew she'd survive, and the vet had me call her every hour for over 24 hours until we both agreed that the baby was safe. She hardly got anymore sleep over that 24 hours than I did, but I couldn't have brought the baby through her first day without that help. And that's not the first time we've been on the phone with them throughout the night. And all three have been to our farm many times at 2 or 3 AM to help us with a sick animal or a difficult birth.

Junkman is right, farmers and animal lovers would be lost without their vets!!!
