Gentleman, Please help...... My Father-in-law was bush hogging the garden with his 8N red belly and everything was going fine untill he was almost done and coming out he ran the mower over a large clump of grass and it stopped the tractor as soon as he hit it. Now we can't get it to start!
The tractor turns over with the starter, we have spark at the points, spark at the coil, I can feel exhaust at the tail pipe when he turns it over. Checked the gas line we have fuel to the carb.:(
Can see no physical damage to mower or tractor:confused:
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

was it a physical blow to the front of the tractor or did the clump choke out the brush hog & stall it?

This an early 8 (front mnt dist) or side mnt?

Stupid question but is there fuel in the tank and is the petcock on regular (1-2 turns open) or reserve, backed out all the way? Fuel in the sediment bowl doesn't mean there's enough to continue through the line to the carb.

Did you pull the plugs and check for spark, and to see if the plugs were getting wet?

When the brush hog hit the clump it stalled out - the dist is on the right side toward the front, the tractor was running fine until it stalled out.

JJ - haven't pulled the plugs yet but I am getting spark throught the wires to the plugs. Held the wire close to the block when he cranked it.

Yes there is fuel and we pulled the line to the carb and checked the little screen filter that is in the carb. My Father in law has had this tractor for quite some time and we service it well. It always starts with just a turn or two of the crank and purrs like a kitten. Just can't figure this out. He is 85 years old and this is his baby, I got to get it running -Thanks again

Fuel, Fire, Compression, and could it possible be out of time?, the distributer loose, and shifted timing?.. just trying to think of things.

If there is a key or switch, check to see a wire didn't come loose during the jolt. The starter will crank with the key off.

I'd bet the plugs are fouled - pull em for a new set.

When you pulled the fuel line off the carb to check the inlet screen did gas come running out of the line or did you turn it off at the tank first?

Will it start on ether?

Got it out of the field - pulled it up to the shop, first thing tommorrow I will pull plugs and inspect, take compression check and report back. I want to thank you for your suggestions. I do have a question, do you think it would be possible for it to have broke the timing chain or skipped a link when it was stalled fast by the bush hog hitting that clump of grass?

One thing's for certain. i can guarantee you that there is -0- possibility for it to be a timing chain issue! :)

Pull the plug on the bottom of the carb and see if you get fuel flow.

next check plugs as JJ sugested.

next, when plugs are out put yer thumb over each plug hole and crank over to see if it's valves are moving. correctly.

catch some of the gas from the carb in a glass and see if there is water in it.

post back.
