I noticed the smokes yesterday and almost posted but decided not to. Now that you have brought it up.... I am working on my third week of not smoking (after 35 years of smoking). I am using the gum and this time I think I have the attitude to give them up for good. Good luck if you give it a try!! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I don't care if you smoke or not...I say do what you like, remember sex used to be safe also.

Good for you. Stick to it. I quit after aroud 45 years of being chain smoker. Did it cold turkey with no aids. I had tried in the past several times and at one time was up into the months.

What made me quit last (and final I hope) time was the money aspect. I was helf way through a 50 mile trip to the base to buy several hundred dollars of smoke and realized that
a. I would probably run out before the month was over.
b. I had a lot better uses for that money.

Turned around, came home, smoked up what I had and quit. That was somewhere around 10 years ago.

Beware the reflexes. They can lead you to believe that you are craving a smoke when you are only missing the 'fiddle factor'. In addition to the physical addiction, there is also the habit ones. Even today after finishing a long or difficult task I occasionally find my fingers dipping into my empty shirt pocket.

thanks for the advice and encouragement, whether to quit or to keep doing it. Seems like ever since I've started there's been someone telling me to quit and others saying just the opposite as I'm sure any smoker can attest to. In all reality though, yeah there's scientific "proof" of what smoking can do to a person, but science still can't explain why one smoker can out live another. It still baffles me to this day why someone of 70+ years of age still smokes and gets along fine and someone of 30 or younger smoker has all sorts of health problems. One thing I do try to hold true though is as turnkey put it, the financial part, I've always told myself if you can't afford it, don't do it. And not just in smoking but in alot of things. My aunt quit many years ago and now buys herself a $500 present every year cuz' that's how much money she saved from quitting. Hmmmmmmmmm, maybe if I quit, I can buy myself a present too, something like a chainsaw! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
But then if I cut myself again, I'd want a cigarette /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
just kiddin!

Sorry it happend and glad it wasn't any worse and you're healing. Also, thanks for the humility to dare to post the pic.'s and story. If it gives just one more of us pause to be more cautious, the post is worth worth it and maybe another comes home safe from the woods.

The SO quit smoking in '84 and we both quit drinking in '87. We figure we can buy quite a few things with the savings. The SO was agonizing over the $$$ to get her own Harley. I reminded her she quit. Slam Dunk - score one hog.

Many moons ago I read on a motorcycle usenet newsgroup about a buch of folks that called themselves "disaster magnets" These guys would chronicle their mistakes, mishaps and misadventures. These folks could turn a mundane chore into an experience that would kill a normal person. Although I never formally applied to this group membership, I consider myself qualified to join this elite fraternity. Welcome to the club! Glad you are OK and learned a bit

I use to smoke the little cigars until January 19 quite cold turkey , well sort of , Had a heart attach and had to have 2 bypasses all at 50 yrs old. Drs said with family cardiac history that if I didntquite I maybe dead in 10 yrs. And seeing I like living and driving my toys the only choice I had was to quit.

As careful and safety conscious as I am, I have many pairs of blue-jeans with chain-saw "scars" on them from over the years of cutting.

A chainsaw can be an odd creature. Sometimes, when it seems somewhat harmless, it will reach out and bight you. Other times you'll think that you're about to seriously hurt yourself with it.....and it does relatively little.
