I'm curious if I should dovetail 2' of a 22' equipment trailer or not. I will be hauling 3pt disc harrows, sprayers, bush hogs. Stuff that drags(some badly) on my deckover trailer without a dovetail. I like the idea of a easy loading angle, but I am concerned about the back of the trailer being too low and dragging.

What is yalls experience?

I'm thinking it may be better to get 5' fold up ramps vs 4' ramps + 2' dove?

My 24' PJ car hauler has a 2' dove tail on it. I like it, sure helps with loading and unloading things. I have never drug the back end of my trailer yet. Where I live everything is flat.

My older trailer was a deck over type with no dove tail. After time and things hanging up we cut the back of the trailer and made a dove tail on it. After we did that, I was able to drive my tractor and hay equipment on with no problems. We made our ramps 4' fold up type. This trailer was much more useful after we built the dove tail on the back.

It is a matter of personal preference. Myself, I would go with 5' ramps and flat bed rather than 2' dovetail and 4' ramps. 5' ramps almost makes up for the 2' dovetail and 4' ramps. Sometimes I just need a long flat bed rather than having the back 2' not as useable. If you already drag with your deckover, then the dovetail will probably be worse. If you plan to haul cars or anything low, then the dovetail maybe useful. Dovetails are more important on higher trailers. I have several trailers, and only my 30' deckover has a dovetail. That 5' dovetail is adjustable to flat or dovetail.

The deckover has never dragged, usually try to find a dip of some kind to help unload it. was just concerned about the lower riding trailer, with the even lower rear. May not be a valid concern at all.

On my 20' dove tail my ramps remove and slide up under the tail. Thats making it even lower than most about 6" atleast I was worried about draging it also when I got it but it hasn't been a issue.I may have heard it scrape on a driveway I was going up but it was extremely banked. I was helping them move and if i had my tractor and mower or Imp. most of the weight is up on the tongue prob. wouldn't have even done it.

I've had both but I presently have no dovetail but eventually I'll modify my 22' Flatbed Trailer to have a dovetail.
Good luck,

I had a 20+5 beaver tail gooseneck that used to drag. I had looked into welding rollers on the back but sold the trailer instead. At the time, I had found what looked to be some pretty hefty rollers that looked like they would help.

When I hauled hay, that little bit of dovetail frame narrowed the usefulness of the beaver tail somewhat.

The dovetail is nice for stepping up on the trailer if you have need to do that often for your useage.

Any trailer is a compromise. Go for what most fits your needs.

I have had both and prefer no Dove Tail. My current trailer has 5.5' ramps and I run my dad and uncles Corvettes all the time with no issues. They are as about as low as you can get and they do not drag.

Here a pic of how low mine sits and if you look you can see were my ramps go. Great for loading low profile cars. I'm in NE Ga. so it's pretty much flat so Haven't had any problem with it.Had it 4yrs. and used it weekly so I don't think the racks would hold up to much of draging.
