Hi friends,
Am pondering downsizing on my tractor, implements. Am building the final resting spot after moving every 2 years for the last 18. whew, buying fixer uppers, living in them while doing so, building is much easier!! the last two places were farms with lots of open acreage to cut, tend. now i have 32 acres all wooded. will open 7-10 acres for a few animals, and to asuage my passion to grow stuff, orchard and vegies, sell a bit at the local farmers market, nothing huge. right now i have a TN65, a very heavy duty maschio tiller (cost about 4500) a chisel plow, 7' box blade and a 6' woods bush bull. the tractor is virtually new, only have 40 hours on it, i bought it 2 years ago to replace my problem child (a '68 JD 2020). i didn't need a tractor this big for my land, but already had the implements and sized it accordingly. i owe about 8k on the TN65, it's very nice with 4 radials, 4wd, fel, and it's way to much fun. have been aching to play on it since i got it, but been to busy finishing the last renovation. well, the new place is being built, and i'm done. is this tractor overkill? would i be better served to downsize, lose the dept and still have something that would work well for me? my set up is worth at least 30k, so could probably get something with all the toys that would work and still lose the dept and maybe come out on top. is this stupid? i'm not suffering with the payments, and its nice being able to move the occasional tree or tip cars. y'all with the CUTs what do you think? thanks

Since you say you aren't suffering with the debt paymens, use what you've got on your new property for a year. Then ask yourself the question again.

With all the land you have you might find the power handy. The only down side I can see is the larger size may not be as manuverable in the woods. But, the flip side is the smaller tractors don't have the power to work the trees the way you can with the bigger tractor. You can probably uproot a tree and root system with what you have, You'd be hard pressed to do that with a 25-30 hp unit. If you don't need to mow a lawn with your tractor--keep it.

If you are doing clearing and cultivating land stay with what you have.

2 years and 40 hours? I've had mine about 3 weeks and it's 50hr maintainance time. It have more, but my wife says I have to go to work during the week. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Keep the bigger tractor for now...

Dave has a great idea - keep it for a year, then decide. It will certainly come in handy for prepping those 7 acres.

hey all,
thanks for the thoughts, very clear thinking. i do want to try clearing with it, waiting and seeing sounds like the ticket. was a bit tempted by having the money for wood floors and such, but all things in time. seems best to keep and see how it works on the new land. thanks again to all.

I agree with keeping it a while. Any time that you "trade" or whatever you may call it you're going to take some loss, even though you might feel you've gotten your money's worth from the equipment. At 40 hours you probably haven't done that!

I'll trade you my TC35D & implements for the 65.. plus it's already broken in.. 1500 hrs. My local dealer even came by to look at it.. said he'd give me 28K for trade in on a a TN75 cab w/ SS.. but the price of the TN was like 60K.

Hi
Keep it and buy a smaller tractor for the smaller jobs. You can't have too many tractors. One size don't fit all jobs on 32 acres.

</font> Try compromising, get a weekend job and take the weekdays off. I'm ready for early retirement, but my wife says I need to work. If she has to, so do I /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif She could support us both, but she doesn't think it would be FAIR. Boy, what a dirty word that is. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
