I am looking to build a relatively inexpensive drag for behind my disk. I want it to smooth out and break up clods. I was thinking about an 8" pipe filled with concrete with a chain running through the middle. Would this work? Or is a chain harrow worth the investment?

Besides smoothing out food plots what else can a chain harrow do? Smooth gravel roads?

I have pulled a log and a heavy creosote post behind my disc with good results. I have also pulled a piece of chain link fence with a fence post chained to it. All work great.

The concrete filled pipe will work fine.

drag harrow007.JPGI made a simple drag made of parallel pieces of scrap angle or even I beam, linked with a "net" of cross-linked chains. One also had some old tires suspended in the chain net, by drilling holes in the tread and running the chain thru them. It works great. Was cheap, and effective. It does surprisingly well even leveling and cleaning up the dirt roads and is bombproof

I do not have access to a welder. Do you think if I built one like the one above but out of a cut up telephone pole it would work?

no welding required. Just drilling 1/2 " holes for eye bolts. I did no welding on these. The edge of the angle acts like a scrape blade, probably better that a round surface for leveling

I have an 8' one of these and it works great: Loyal - Roth Manufacturing - Tine Harrows

It's actually three drags in one. One side is smooth and on the other side you can get two different extremes, depending on which direction you pull. Good for digging up areas for over seeding too.

If you have people who continually trespass on your land with ATV's it would make a great spike strip also. Left for a week or two in the grass it gets almost impossible to see so just remember where you leave it!

If you have access to some chain link fencing (as small as 4'X4') you can make a drag harrow for free; I did. Don't have any pictures, but I just put some heavy rocks on it and drag it over the food plots to settle the seeds and smooth the ground. Works very well.
