Drag Harrow Question

I'm going to purchase a drag harrow and aren't sure if I should get a 4 x 8 or 6 x 8 size.
The tractor is a 50 hp. The width is 4 ft inside to inside the rear tires.

I plan to drag roughly 8-10 acres.

The 4 x 8 is readily available while the 6 x 8 is 3 plus weeks and for some reason is near double the cost of the 4 x 8.

Having never owned one is there a rule of thumb to what width to go with?

I pull a 4x4 chain harrow behind my atv and it covers my tracks and doesn't work the atv too hard. If I was getting one to pull behind a tractor, I would look for at least an 8' width.

I think 6x8 would still be too small. I'd DEFINITELY avoid the 4x8. You'd be at it forever dragging 8 acres.

I'm with orange... 8' minimum.

I have a 15'x6' spiked tooth harrow . Are you looking for something more rigid or a chain harrow?

If you are looking at TSC the 8x8 is just a little more expensive than the 6x8. Go with the wider version from EA or TSC, you will be glad you did. I have the 8X8.

I made a "drag something". 3" diameter series 80 header pipe and a double layer of chain link fencing. Its 10 feet wide and 8 feet deep. It does a smashing job of breaking up dirt clods, smoothing & leveling and raises a monumental cloud of dust.

How did you secure the chain link fencing to the frame? Wire?

Did you have to add any weight to it or was the pipe heavy enough to keep it from bouncing around too much?

The 3" pipe is the only frame and the fencing is attached to the pipe with the heaviest most cantankerous wire I've ever used. The wire is old telephone wire called copper weld. The header pipe is attached with chain to a pipe running thru the 3 point lower arms. The fencing just drags free and you bet - at certain times it does really bounce around. However, all in all & based upon the cost - free - it does a more than suitable job. i wanted a spike tooth harrow but settled for this when I saw the price. I look at it this way - to get the ground in a final way needed to plant I often have to make two or occasionally three passes - an easy job and more seat time.
