Drag Harrow -Tricks to adding weight?

I had good luck yesterday with adding old fence posts up top. Worked well. My style of drag harrow rarely plugs unless I get in to a patch of old thick hay then it balls up and can easy be removed. I then set the mower low and mow over everything to pulverize the thatch.

Cat Fever - do you replant every year? Just curious as it looks like a perfect seed bed?

The short answer is no. But, for the next few years I am going to plant oats to minimize weeds. After that I'll hit it hard with alfalfa and hopefully be good for several years. I have alfalfa now it's just very thin.

Over here, just around the corner in SW Colorado many folks use a mix of irrigated pasture grass (about 10 varieties mixed together) with about 20% alfalfa mixed in. Its more tolerant to our water and weather. Makes great hay for the horses - not too hot with just a kick.

I only feed cows. They look at grass hay, sniff it, look at me like I'm retarded and moo. :confused3: They don't like it. But they love oats. :licking: I might try oats and peas next year.

Powerscol,
How did your field prep work out? Did you seed with anything and have you gotten any rain?

***First I need to run to the COOP for bulk fertilizer will save me 40% over the bags 1000 lbs will run me about $225. Never gotten bulk befor so getting from the big bag to my small fertilizer cart will be interesting.***

Save your horse feed bags, and bag it up. Once you get 2-3 shovel fulls in, the bag will stand there by itself. Better is you have someone to hold it. I got 800# of potash last week at the local mill that sells in bulk. Filled them by myself, and took approx. 30 minutes. Filling them just over 1/2 full makes about 60#.

Backing the tractor & 3 pt. spreader up to the truck made it perfect for dumping the bags in. A little work on the filling the bags end, saved a lot of work on the unloading end, plus no fertilizer to wash out of the truck.

With the 4 fence posts on the harrow everything went well (I made two passes in different directions to get the grass to stand up) - also used the mower to level out and distribute the horse poo. No major rain yet we got a little snow, but not enough. I shipped my irrigation pump out for service. Should be back next week so I can use the winter pond accumulation. Still have not fertilized yet.

Wish I could send some rain your way; my field is all mud right now. It's been a rain/snow mix for a few days now, so kind of cold. If it would just warm up I know my field would take right off.
It won't be long and we'll all be complaining about the heat.:)
