draw backs of burying a stump

Well I had a old dead tree with about a 24" girth that I cut down. The root ball and stump that is left I can't pick up with my JD 4110. I have dug down so that I can push what is left into a hole and I should have almost 3' of soil on top of it. We plan on planting 2 Quaking Aspens that we have in the nursery in it's place. What does everyone think about handling it this way? Would I be better off dragging this thing up the ramp I already have dug and pushing it off somplace else?

I'd say you made a good decision.

The problem with burying stumps is the ground will settle in time as it decays. You never want to do it in an areas you will build on or put a road. Even in a pasture, you'll end up with a low spot years from now.

But to plant new trees over it, I'd say you did the right thing.

The only concern I would have would be air pockets that might develop over time and affect your new trees roots. Can you burn it where it is?

Personally, I would rather try to burn the stumps and be rid of them. Otherwise, as Eddie mentioned you will have settling for years to come.

The ground will settle a bit every year for decades. So you throw some black dirt in the low spots or put a flower bed over it, or plant another tree like you mentioned. Just don't put anything like a shed, a pool, a driveway, etc... over it.

Eddie, your right and I thought about the decaying issue. This thing is huge. I will post a pick this evening. Might be best to drag it out because when this thing rots it's going to leave a big depression. Probably not in my life time but I would hate to leave a surprise like that to whom ever ends up with the place when it does.
