Not sure if this is the right place for this but it is a repair and without it I can't work on the tractor.

I need to get the chuck off of a 1/2" craftsman drill. Took the retaining screw out but I cannot get the chuck to screw off. Does anyone have any sortcuts or hints to get it off? Counterclockwise is the correct way to take it off right?

Thanks

Todd

It may be a compression fit. Tap it a few times with a wood or plastic mallet and see if that does it for you.

Todd, I'll assume yours is close to the same as my 1/2" Craftsman hammer drill. The retaining screw is left hand threads; loosen by turning clockwise. But you say you already have that out. The recommended next step is to insert the small end of a 5/16", OR LARGER, hex wrench into the chuck and tighten the chuck onto it just as you would tighten a drill bit in it. Then with a mallet, strike the long end of the hex wrench to loosen the chuck, and yes, it's right hand threads; i.e., counterclockwise to loosen. In other words, you need a sudden impact to loosen it.

Bird you amaze me with the good advice you give on here all the time. I never thought of that. I was going to suggest That he put the chuck key in it and hit it with a soft hammer. I wish every one on here always gave (good advice) like you all the time. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the advice. I would have never thought of the allen wrench. I tried hitting the chuck key but it wasn't effective at all. The allen wrench worked great 2-3 hits and it was loose.

Thanks again,

Todd

I used that same approach to get the 3 jaw chuck off of my Atlas/Craftsmen 6" metal lathe. One whack with a soft blow hammer and the chuck was loose. I had spent quite a bit of time fussing around with other ways to get the chuck off before I tried the allen wrench technique. Of course the wrench I used was a 3/4". :D:D:D
