Picked up a gun this past week and the guy at the counter I needed to watch it as my DL was about to expire shortly.

I told him I wasn't looking forward to go to the DMV for various reasons to renew the DL.

He told me he did it online and explained why, and I was like "really?".

Renewed my DL for 8 years online and it only took 5 minutes max.

If you need to renew your DL, take a look at your states options for renewing online.

At least it buys me another 8 years to have to go in person ($5 per year, total cost online $40). Even if I went in person and it was free, the $40 is well worth it to me not to have to deal with the department in person.

In Louisiana, you can go to a third party vendor for most renewal issues and other services. They usually have short (or no) lines. They charge a fee (abt. $18) over and above the renewal fees but it is worth the $$ not to have to stand in line and deal with the state zombies.

My daughter renewed her OH driver's license online while she was a student living in MI. Apparently OH will let you renew on line 1 time. Otherwise you have to go in person so they can test your eyesight.

Just renewed my Ontario, Canada drivers licence on line as well. Worked great, and had the new one in about 3 weeks.

Wisconsin still requires the "visit" (good for 8 years I think because they want an updated photo plus they are now issuing "REAL ID" compliant cards that will be needed to fly (and a few other things) starting in 2020.

Can't renew a CDL online in NY. Requires going to DMV. I do wish mine was only $40. I think mine is like $164.50 or $180.50 for 8 years, can't remember which.

Just renewed my FL license and online was not an option. I thought all states were required to prove citizenship by federal law. I did try to look into doing it online and almost got scammed by a look alike site.

I had to present my birth certificate, SS card, and two pieces of mail with my name and address.

Been renewing online every time possible since about 2001. Much easier and less hassle.

My mom is over 80 and now Texas requires her to renew every 2 years in person. The only test is a vision test.
