The culvert under my drive is rusting out. This is a fairly large culvert approx. 2 feet in dia, and about 26 ft long. What I would like to do is sleeve a slightly smaller plastic culvert inside the existing culvert. This should still give me enough capacity. I'm wondering if the switching from galv. metal to plastic culvert will have the same effect as with water pipe: you can go one size small and keep the same flow. Has anyone done this? Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks, yes its straight. Did you seal the two together any way. I'm worry about the water washing around the insert.

Larry, check out this link, it has instructions for installing culverts as well as maintaining dirt/gravel roads

No I didn't seal the insert, for in time the gravel & dirt fill between the two culverts..the dump end of the culvert I did pack w/rocks so the gravel so the water wouldn't push the gravel thru.

I've run plastic inside plastic to increase the crush rating when I could not bury the culvert as deep as I would like.

The problem I've seen with steel culverts is that they rot out on the bottom and collapse, what originally was a round 2' culvert may look more oval than round after 20 years.

It's worth a try, if you cannot get a new culvert pushed thru the old, you can always dig it up, (more seat time).

If it's on the county right of way I'd call them and see what you're allowed to do. Around here if you get creative you can come home and find the whole mess dug out.

Be sure and check with county. In my area you buy the first culvert and they maintain/replace from then on....

If its on your property then removal might be the best option as rust thru may complicate inserting the plastic tile. Just a thought.....

Larry , I used a piece of this double walled PVC for my culvert. TSC carries it in 15" ID X 20' long. The OD is about 18", but it needs to be double walled for strength. Don't know if it comes any larger or not. The nice part is that it is designed with an "O" ring to allow it to fit end to end, and you can cut it in half to haul in a pickup or van and then put it back together, and one man can handle it.
