Using ground up asphalt makes the best roadbed without paving. Next is crushed 11/4 minus. Use shot rock if it is available to you. Using round, or river gravel that has been crushed still has round rock in it and is forever rolling away, just doesn't bind up well. Before you lay down new, be sure to rip the existing down to the bottom of the potholes and get the bed smoothed and ready for the top course. After getting the finish course down and graded, if you can water it and roll with a vibrating roller it will make the best road possible. Be sure to crown the road at about 2 percent if possible to let the water drain and keep the ditches clear.
