\"dry clutch\" question

Hello guys

Novice regarding this issue! Considering a grand L3430HST. I see that it has a dry clutch. How much of a big deal is a dry clutch in comparrison to a "wet clutch". Thanks.

Re: \"dry clutch\" question

With the HST, your dry clutch will be dormant 90% of the time. The only need to depress the clutch pedal will be to initially start the tractor and change ranges. All directional changes and speed changes will be handled by the HST pedal and the throttle.

This hold true for the brakes also. The HST has inherent braking capabilities so your brakes are only necessary when freewheeling and for keeping the tractor from moving when stopped.

Re: \"dry clutch\" question

A dry clutch when used with a hydro would last forever. The clutch is used very little to none for the type of use that it sees with a regular transmission. If it were a standard transmission of some type, then the wet clutch would last many many times longer.

Re: \"dry clutch\" question

I only use my clutch on my L3430 HST to start the pto when at idle. And to start the tractor of course. I used to use it for changing ranges and to put in four wheel drive, but I found it works better without, just come to a full stop first.

Re: \"dry clutch\" question

Same here. I only use the clutch for starting and PTO engagement. Range changes are always at a stop, sometimes a VERY gentle tap on the HST pedal gets it in gear.

Re: \"dry clutch\" question

Interesting.

On my 5030 I never used the clutch for the PTO as the PTO is hydraulically actuated so it has it's own clutch per se'. I'd always engage at an idle and then increase the rpm. Same is true for the M9.

Only time I used the clutch and PTO together was if the implement (like the steel wheel crimper) got overloaded. Then I'd disengage the PTO with the clutch to stop the PTO right now.

At 500 hours, my clutch on the 5030 probably had dust on it.

My M9 has a wet, multi plate clutch pack for the hydraulic shuttle. It modulates itself from forward to reverse so the clutch is only for range changes and complete stops. Love that turbo whine!!!
