I would like to hear what you feed your dogs & would you recommend it.

I currently have 2 girl dogs about 40 pounds each, My big girl died about 5 months ago & I would like to have another big dog. Some where in the 100 pound range.

Been up & down the internet looking & just about every recommended food is something I've never heard of.

Currently feeding food called Old yeller & one called Apptito, one from Kroger & the other from the local feed store. 1 has corn as its first ingredient then wheat & the other Wheat then corn, then meat "Products.

The 2 girls eat about 100 pounds a month + another 50 or so pounds if I get a new big dog. The girls never know hunger as there is always food in their dishes & the eat when ever they want. Very busy & active girls, mother is almost skinny & daughter husky, neither fat.

I was thinking maybe add 1, 50# bag of food that has meat first on the ingredients list.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

We feed "Taste of the Wild." High protein, no grains. Meat is the first ingredient. Dog likes it. Our friends with a Weimeraner and German Shorthaired Pointer put us on to it. We buy it it Tractor Supply, but other pet stores carry it. Grocery stores do not.

I have tried several cheap brands, and my Great Pyrenees would eat 2 bowls a day and stay skinny. Then I started feeding Pedigree dry,and now 1 bowl is all they will eat,and they stay in good shape.

I have used the Purina brand dog chow in a box feeder for my last three dogs. 32 years so far. Age was hard to determine as all three came to me used. Mix it up with canned food and Hi-pro dry dog food in the winter. The Tsc stores used to carry canned, "taste of the wild", and the current Newfoundland loves the fish based stuff.

I second "Taste of the Wild". Our Springer has only eaten TotW since weened. The breeder started her on the dry salmon flavor and we continued. It's very good food. She's very healthy with a smooth coat.

We did some research. I give 4 heath by tractor supply a very good rating. First ingredient is meat/protein and it is usually on near the top of most lists. It cleared up or boxers skin issues within a month and the dogs actually ate less food and did not act hungry than they did than the cheaper brands. The taste of the wild also comes up as pretty good from what I saw too.

Here is a definitive review of top dry dog foods. I feed my hunting labs 1/2 Taste of the Wild - Wetlands (from Tractor Supply) and Costco Kirkland Chicken (surprisingly highly rated).

Corn is a worthless ingredient. Avoid it at all costs. Most grains are not much better.

my wife is a registered clinical dietitian so she's choosy about what our pup (pictured at left) eats, as you can imagine. she's done the science here, there and everywhere and at the end of the day the truth, unfortunately, is that good dog food costs money. a lot of the good foods aren't sold at big-box stores because they aren't cheap and it might be the reason a lot of us haven't heard of them. i guess that's similar to shopping for human food at a national chain v. a local health food shop, two totally different product lines.

feeding a 'raw' diet can be cheaper but there's considerable effort and a lot of education involved in making sure that the dog gets a healthy balanced diet. we are currently feeding fromm's, errr fromm'$
