:laughing:Yep, Cyril and Jack, you guys definitely have faster service, but apparently it's not DSL. When I first started on the Internet out in the country, it was dial-up and I had two phone numbers; one to talk and one for Internet and I think 26k was about my top speed. I'm going to guess your faster service costs a bit more than mine, too.;) When the lady at CenturyLink told me she could upgrade mine from 1.5M to 10M, I told her that sounded good except I didn't need it badly enough to pay extra for it, so she said it wouldln't cost me any more.

Mind if I ask what they charge for your service?

CenturyTel just teased me. :)

I checked their website and it led me to believe we might be able to get faster service. Their website stinks.

The website is so bad, I had to actually call, wait on hold for 10 minutes and talk to a person.

Bottom line is we have the fastest service available to our location. They did say that we should talk to the local service guys and see if we can get better speeds. We had done this before which is how we know the road to our west has faster service. Seems like I have heard other TBNers saying to bug the service guy if you see them and since the CenturyTel office told me too, I will. :D

Cyril, this might be a long story.:D We have had the telephone service with unlimited long distance at no cost, call forwarding, call waiting, caller ID, etc., etc. (the whole shootin' match) for $39.95 a month and our 1.5M DSL Internet service for $30.00 a month; total of $69.95 plus all those taxes and other little fees that have made it actually $94.30 a month total.

The 9th of this month, my Internet service was not working, so I called and the tech support guy spent an hour or so having me change this, change that, delete this, delete that and he finally concluded that their old modem had died in spite of the lights blinking on it. So he said he'd have to send me a new modem. No cost for the modem, but $14.95 S&H for 3 to 5 day service, $23.95 for next day service. I told him I didn't think that was right, since it was their equipment, but that I'd agree to pay the $23.95. So the new modem came, and it worked.

Then when I got the bill, it showed $22.95 S&H but a total of an even $31.00 extra with all the little fees and taxes. So I called the billing department and told the lady I just wanted to register a complaint about $31.00 being more than the $23.95 I'd agreed to and that I didn't really think I should have had to pay anything. She told me there not only wasn't anything she could do about those charges, but also "didn't he tell you there would also be a recurring monthly rental fee for the new modem?" I said, "No, he didn't, but Charter Communications has been after my business so maybe I should be talking to them instead of you."

At that point, she asked me to hold a minute while she reviewed my "entire account". When she came back she said she was transferring me to another lady she thought could help me. The second lady was very friendly, but first said she couldn't do anything about those charges (which I'd already paid the day before), but that she could give me a $10 a month discount for 12 months. I said, "Now you're sounding just like those crooks at DirecTV." (Yeah, I know I shouldn't have said that).

At that point she said she had to check something, then told me they had a "new package deal" and I could get everything we currently have with a 5 year price guarantee, but no contract to sign, for $59.95 plus the taxes and fees, and she said she'd been told to tell customers that the taxes and fees were usually about $15. And she said she could also increase my 1.5M DSL to 10M. When I said that would be nice, but I didn't need the speed enough to pay more for it, she said, "Oh, no, no additional charge." And she said she could issue a credit for that $22.95 S&H charge, too.

So she said the next bill is going to look like a mess because it will have that credit, then show our old rates for March 18 to March 31 and the new rates for March 31 to April 18.

So if she was telling the truth about the billing, as she was about the DSL speed, I should save somewhere between $10 and $19 off the $94.30 a month I've been paying.

Bird, you were transfered to the "customer retention department". Those folks always have the authority and best deals.

I just received a call from the phone company wanting to "earn my business back" from Comcast.

Gosh Bird, that is a long convoluted story. That sounds like our billling department.. it all depends on who you get to talk to. I am glad you got the upgrade on the DSL speed. ( and save some $) Aint it nice to download manuals, and pictures and things in a flash now? A fellow TBN' er came by today to buy some pallet forks from me, and he mentioned still being on dialup and could not easily download pictures much. I had forgotten what it was like on dialup, wow.. no VOIP phones, no netflix, no downloading 100 page manuals in a couple of seconds.. but on the other hand, I can remember going from a 300 baud modem to a 2400 baud modem and thinking, boy now that is fast! Good luck with the billing department!

Thanks for the info Bird. A great deal no doubt. We have good speed, but we only ordered their basic internet and it still costs the $50 bucks a month.:( We checked on basic cable when we bought the house 6-1/2 years ago and they quoted us the same $50 bucks a month for basic cable. I spent $60 and bought a good antenna. Last year they offered me basic cable for $10 bucks a month and I went with it. Last month they raised that to $17.95. I'm seriously considering plugging the antenna back in and telling them to take their $17.95 and keep it. 30 seconds with a 7/16 wrench and the whole house will be switched back to antenna and we actually get better picture with less pictilization from the antenna on all but one station. The only reason I went with the $10 package was that the station we stopped getting after everything went digital is the one I like to use for my morning alarm to wake me up with the local morning news. There are still two other stations that I can get the news on though so I'm not without options.:D

Bird...I have the same deal you had..."$39.95 a month and our 1.5M DSL Internet service for $30.00 a month; total of $69.95 plus all those taxes and other little fees that have made it actually $94.30 a month total". Mine's with AT&T.

I also was surprised that a third of the bill was taxes, and fees! I just went to DSL about 4 months ago. I feel cheated by not knowing about the extra charges.

When we built our house in the woods, Comcast wanted to charge us $3000 - $4000 to run their coax cable down our 900 ft driveway. I just wanted internet and phone so we went with the phone company's phone and DSL service. The phone company didn't charge us anything for running the phone wire to our house. Comcast was basically unwilling to talk to us. We were willing to buy the cable and run it ourselves down the driveway but we couldn't get anyone at Comcast to even talk to us about options. For $3000+ a person could get a lot of Dish TV service.

I was interested in cable internet so we would have options, either use the phone company or cable company, depending on who provided the best service. We don't have options though because Comcast took themselves out of the picture. Fortunately, our phone company DSL service has been pretty good and reliable. It's a little slower than cable but for our needs has been adequate.
