Spoke to Terry today, getting as much info as I can about the PT. He said Dualies are a no-no as the motors will prematurely fail. Terry is also standing firm by the poor maintenance for overheating and 2-ply is more than enough. So that being said I thought i might ask the experts about this subject.

I am struggling to rationalize the higher cost on the 1845 for just dualies and a little HP... Then again, maybe the 1430 won't have enough HP to get up and down my hills.

I guess the questions to Terry would be: "How often should the maintenance be done?". If he says every 8 hours and you have to clean every 2 to prevent overheating then it's not a maintenance issue. If he says every hour then you are at "fault", but no one would buy a machine that requires that much maintenace. If the maintenace requirement is rebuild the engine every hour, they will sell zero machines. Just tell me this before I buy it.

Carl, I have the 1430. I tried reversing the wheels for a wider track for mowing on hills but it didn't work very well because the wheels turned out to be a little wider than the mower and it didn't cut very clean. Also, for mowing, I would like to have that extra HP. Also the tilt seat and some brakes. I will say that I haven't had as big a problem with the engine over heating. I only clean the oil cooler about 6 times a year. Contrary to what some say, cut's will also get plugged up when the chafe is real bad, both the radiator and air cleaner. They do have the advantage in this respect ( disadvantage in all other respects ) in that the cutter is behind the tractor so your not driving into the chafe coming out of the mower as you are with the PT with the mower out front. I've had a couple of flats in 700 hrs of use with the original 2 ply tires. they are a lot easier and cheaper to change and repair however.

On my old IH2500b I had to stop a couple/three times in 4 hours and clean out the transmission oil cooler and radiator when I was brush hogging dry weeds that were over the hood like in my videos of the PT425. I've never had to stop to clean out the little gas Kohler, but I do blow out the engine compartment with a leaf blower about every 4 hours. I also had a problem with flats on my 2 ply turfs when brush hogging in the woods. I tubed one of them and double dosed them all with slime. I think if I knew my primaty use would be brush hogging, I would go with a heavier ply tire.
